movie trick

I actually don't have a trick or mod to tell yall, but I am in need of one!!!

I have the garmin 260w and want to put a media player on it. Does anyone know how to get a movie player on there so I can watch my vids on the go? I have not seen this done yet but I don't want to spend 300$ for a new system!

Any and all help is appreciated! Thanks!

    {I'm moving this out of the Tips & Tricks forum since it is neither and into the Nuvi forum.}

    If you can figure out how to do this, then you'll be the first one - congratulations. There's a thread on another site discussing the "movie" that runs on the Nuvi's in store displays. Nobody has revealed how that works. But I suspect, regardless of how it works, it would not be suited to watching "real" movies.

    There is no way to install third party software on a Nuvi. Period. It's a closed system. If you really want a GPS which can do this, consider selling the Nuvi and getting a unit based on Windows CE. These include Navigon, Mio, Magellan, HP and others. These can all be "unlocked", allowing you to install Windows Mobile and Windows CE applications such as movie players. You can generally download complete packages (skins) which users have put together just for this sort of thing.

    One poster mentions that the "movie" playing on demo devices is an animated GIF, so until somebody takes the time for a linux-hack on the new models that use it, don't look for any Garmins to double as a movie player.

    So even though we can add data, a 3rd party media player is out of the question? (sorry if this just refrases your statement but I want to make sure)

    and also to clarify, the jpg picture viewer only holds jpg's right? -or can it view more?

    Correct

    There are no 3rd party programs which run on Garmin. We don't even know what their operating system is (except the 800 and 5000 series which use some custom version of linux).

    Really, forget it. If this is important to you, sell the nuvi and get a Win CE based unit. There are lots of hacks, skins and 3rd party apps which run on them.
