Nuvi 1690 keeps shutting down unexpectedly.

I bought my dad a Nuvi 1690 for his birthday and the poor guy has had problems with it since he first tried to use it.

Right out of the box I hooked it up to the computer and made sure the software was up to date and updated the map for him. The first trip out he was driving down the Highway and the 1690's screen went black. After some time of playing with the power button it came back on but only to shut down again. When he got home I hooked it up to the computer again and it said I needed to update the software so I did. I tried it in my car for a week and had no problems with it. I gave it back to him and after 20 minutes of driving it shut down on him. He held the power button for a while and it fired up again. This morning I called Garmin but I didnt have time to wait 30 min for someone to answer so I am turning to the brilliant minds in this forum. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You said the unit was updated upon purchase but how long ago was that? Garmin continues to update unit firmware & may have resolved certain issues with the latest firmware update. The latest firmware for the 1690 is v3.40 released on May 7 2010:

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4665

To see what firmware is on the unit: Tools>Settings>System>About and look at the "Software Version x.xx" (Garmin-speak for firmware)

If you're at v3.00 or below, you should definitely update the unit.

Preferably, use WebUpdater rather myGarmin for updating. See the following sticky for more info: http://forums.gpsreview.net/discussion/16792/x/p1/

Also do a hard reset immediately after the update or do it anyways if you're already at v3.40 as it may help clear out any strange problems.

Yeah I updated it again on May 12 and verified I had v3.40 on the unit. It has shut down once since then. Thank you for the help, I will try a hard reset.

I don't know anything about the 1690, but what strikes me is the fact you had no trouble for a week in your car. Is it possible he has some power issue with the outlet in his car, or is not getting a good connection, so basically it is draining the battery and dying?

Well possibly, but that would mean my Toyota 4runner has the same issue. The first time it happened was in my 4runner and the latest occurance was in his pickup. It worked fine in my Civic for that entire week. The little red light is constantly on when it is plugged into the 12 Volt DC, but that may not mean its getting the right power. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

If you're still in the "window", which is sounds like you are, just return it for a refund or exchange it for another new one. ASAP

With a new exchange, at least you'd be able to isolate whether or not it was a car related problem because I highly doubt you'd get two faulty units back-to-back malfunctioning in exactly the same way.
