Have a look at the Groundspeak GPS forum, there are always plenty of people who charge right into the newest beta firmware over there. One user said it bricked his Montana and after working through things on the phone with Garmin they said it would have to be returned and exchanged.

As always, take these kinds of reports with a grain of salt. But I still never want to be the first kid on the block with any Garmin firmware, especially beta.

    That's good to know!

I will look over there later 2nite... Garmin even states that beta's are at your own risk, so they do not have to replace your unit if you brick it... I might end up waiting until the next full release myself!

Montana beta 3.98 has just been released. There is one HUGE improvement here that I've wanted all along - Added ability to remove the red pin while panning the map. Being able to add a via is also something that was very much needed. And it looks like this update will also allow imported routes to be used without recalculating, something that a lot of people have wanted.

But I am still on some very old firmware. Will wait to see some user feedback before I try this, but I'm tempted. :)

I was feeling brave today so I just installed the new 4.10 Montana firmware that incorporates all the recent beta improvements. Glad that I backed up my Montana first, because it destroyed the profile that I normally use, in spite of the fact that I made a point to select a different profile before the upgrade. Apparently, the first profile on the list gets hosed. My other profiles seem to be OK. Restoring from a backup of the profile fixed the problem.

I will be heading out soon on a short drive/hike to see how it all works. I had been running some very old firmware (3.60) until now, so there are a lot of changes. The first thing that struck me was how map scrolling is now much more fluid. And I *love* being able to switch between track-up/north-up by just tapping the compass icon. They should add this feature to all their devices. :)
  • babj615 41 Points
Funny, Boyd, as I just had the same issue with My Oregon 450 and Firmware 5.70

I had quite a bit of trouble restoring my Profiles from backups until I remembered to first delete them ALL from the Oregon, reboot, then copy from the archives and reboot.

    fun times!
  • Boyd 1737 Points
As far as I can tell, the only damaged profile was the first one on the list. I deleted it using the menu on the Montana, then just copied that single profile back to the Montana and everything was fine.

Just got back from my outing and everything seems to work fine. Will be taking a longer trip in the next couple days. Regarding the more responsive screen, that seems like a mixed blessing. When you first drag the map it is very fast, but that leaves a blank area that was originally off-screen. And it seems to take a long time to fully refresh the entire screen and fill in that blank area. The end result seems as though it takes longer now to fully refresh the screen after dragging the map.
  • Boyd 1737 Points

Well actually I now find that screen refresh is much faster than before, both while dragging the map and also while driving in track up mode. The problem I mentioned above is another artifact of the firmware update process. After updating firmware, ALL maps were enabled in ALL profiles. So the unit was actually drawing 4 maps at the same time. No wonder it felt sluggish!

When I went through my profiles and disabled the extra maps, everything started working very well. I have read about this update bug before, and also about corrupting your profiles. It's a minor annoyance, but I wish they could do something about it.
