  • Hi, I've been gone for a while (I am a Nuvi-885, 660 owner). I've acquired a Oregon 450. It has v6.3 software.

    Questions:
    -- Should I update to 6.6?
-- How do I, ID the exact model of 450 I have?

    Thanks for any help given,
    Bruce

Welcome back! I don't think there are different "models" of the 450, aside from the 450t that included a 100k topo map and additional internal memory to hold it.

There was a very good wiki for the Oregon but it no longer exists. Happily, you can still access it through the wayback machine at archive.org however. Unfortunately, the last firmware version they cited was 6.20. But there's still a lot of good info.

It seems to me that garmin has slowed down the release of update for their device quite a bit.
  • sussamb 621 Points
My 5 devices are now so stable that no updates are required, so maybe the slow down is simply because of that?
  • Boyd 1725 Points
Well that is a Montana update and it sounds like it might be related to the problem discussed here. http://forums.gpsreview.net/discussion/30751/montana-680t-not-showing-as-usb

I hope so as I have been relying on a second hand monterra since my 276CX and then my 680T went back. I've shied off buying another Montana for fear of hitting the same USB problem.

What windows do you have? I have to say despite all the flaws that windows 10 have it has never crashed on any of my computers yet.

And besides doyou really want to compare a complex operating system like windows to a much simpler one (its based on Linux isnt it?) like the oregon which is enclosed to do a specific task???
  • Boyd 1725 Points
Garmin doesn't disclose what runs their handheld devices, but I think it is a stripped down proprietary operating system. They are notoriously buggy, especially new models. They certainly are not as robust as a "real" operating system such as Windows, MacOS or Linux.

I have both Win7 and Win10, and I didn't say they crashed but programs running on them do. Fact is random crashes occur, never found Garmin any different to anything else, maybe I'm just lucky ;)

I have always thought Garmin made quality products, and eventually they shake the bugs out. But in recent years they seem to be rushing new devices out the door without mature firmware. This isn't just some crazy theory of mine, it has been widely discussed on other forums as well as here.

People were really excited about the Oregon 600 series when it was introduced. Six months later there was widespread frustration that Garmini hadn't fixed the bugs. I gather that they finally did, but it took over a year. Then there is the Monterra, an Android based device originally selling for $700. By all reports, it was virtually unusable at introduction and slower than the older Montana that uses Garmin's proprietary operating system.

Again, I gather the problems have been mostly fixed and I now see positive reviews from Monterra owners. But it took two or three years, and it still has a street price of around $500. The latest example is the GPSMap276cx, a $800 device that many people were really excited about. This rollout has basically been a disaster, with many people returning them: http://forums.gpsreview.net/discussion/30653/the-legendary-all-terrain-navigation-equipment-is-back-gpsmap-276cx

I wish Garmin would get their act together with these top of the line devices, they seem to be doing better with the less expensive models, probably because they are just incremental improvements on earlier models.
