2595: How much free memory?

According to "myDashboard" my 2595 with the current maps and a few custom POI files currently has only 3.267MB of free memory. For a unit with 8GB of installed memory this doesn't seem like much. Can others out there advise what they show for free space? (Doesn't have to be a 2595, any from the current line is fine.)

Just wondering if this is normal or expected for this unit. Thank you

That seems normal. Fresh out of the box, the 3790, 3490 and 3590 have a little over 2 GB free, out of 8 GB capacity.

Your 2595 has voice command, so there are a bunch of ASR files for the voice recognition along with all the other stuff.

This certainly wasn't the case when I got my 3790 in summer 2010. I just looked at the backup I ran when it was fresh out of the box, and it was 4.2GB.

I don't have lifetime maps so I can't say how much has changed. In addition to gmapprom.img, I know that gmap3d.img and gmapdem.img have gotten larger and the junction view file also has. So you may be right, but I'm surprised that these things have grown as much as 2GB.

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you tell me what you are currently showing for free space on your unit? (or anyone else). I checked the size of the custom POIs I have loaded: approx. 1.25MB. (I also only have about 20 saved favorites at this time.) Based on your response for the above units, I'm just wondering where the 2GB's went. Hard to believe it all goes to voice recognition and bluetooth and it doesn't leave a lot left over for the future.

One of the reasons I went with this unit was the 8GB of memory. It never occured to me that most of it would be taken or there would be so little free space.

I use my 3790 most everyday and have had it since it was first released in 2010. I have deleted most of the voices on the unit but other than that it's pretty much stock with the exception of 40000KB of POIs. Given that, I'm showing 2.33GB free on the 8GB internal storage drive.

The big files on the drive are all for City Navigator NA 2012.40 and are as follows:

    gmapprom - 1,663,328KB
    gmapdem - 1,198,560KB
    gmapbmap - 49,824KB
    gmap3D - 181,936KB
    JCV - 460,012KB

If I calculate the size of those files correctly it's 3.39GB of the available storage size of 7.28GB. Subtracting by free space of 2.33GB from the remaining 3.89GB (7.28 less 3.39) would indicate that, on my unit, I have 1.56GB of space taken up by something other than map files.

Interesting. Just for comparison purposes, my 3790 file sizes from April 2010 are

    gmapprom- 1,290,592KB
    gmapdem - 1,198,560KB
    gmapbmap - 49,824KB
    gmap3d - 154,816KB
    JCV - 48,223KB

My ASR folder is about 579MB and Voices about 457MB, so that's a big chunk of your additional 1.5GB I suspect.

Are you confusing GB with MB. My 2595 shows 3.11 GB free out of 8 GB. Io see how much you have plug the unit in the computer, go to Start/Computer. Underneath the NUVI it shows the amount free. Also You can right click on NUVI,select properties and it will show the non rounded amount of free space. If you have really loaded it up with that many POI files to get down to 3 meg free it would be wise to get an SD card and put the POI files on there.
  • Well, like a fool I took what myDashboard was telling me as truth (should know better) so when it says: 3.26MB of free space I believed it.

Over to my computer > Garmin > internal storage [properties] and what does the "pie" show me??? 3.19GB free! Never Mind! :?

Not that it matters as the OP's issue seems to have been solved but for comparison purposes, are you sure your ASR folder isn't 579MB

    My unit shows:

    ASR - 767MB

Voices - 95.2MB but as I said I have deleted most of them, leaving only the English language voice files on the 3790

Yeah, you're right, that was a typo. :)

Sorry about my earlier reply. I checked my records again and here's the data I have:

    - 1450LMT (brand new, 5.50 firmware, 2012.10 CNNT maps): 1.52 GB used, 1.76 GB capacity

    - 2450LM (don't have a record of it brand new, but with 2.80 firmware, 2012.40 ALL CNNT trafficTrends NA 4.25 maps): 3.34 GB used, 3.60 GB capacity

    - 3790LMT (brand new, 2012.10 CNNT maps): 4.15 GB used, 7.28 GB capacity

    - 3490LMT (don't have record of it brand new, but with 6.30 firmware and 2012.40 maps DEM, 3D and CNNT): 5.08 GB used, 7.28 GB capacity
  • Hey class3! How can you have all this data? Do you own each of these devices?

I did have all of them at one time. I was doing some testing and eventually most of them went back.
