Apple taps TomTom for new iOS 6 Maps app data

Cnet Reports - Apple unveiled its new Maps app for iOS 6 today at the World Wide Developers Conference. Tom Tom, maker of navigation devices and software is one of the main providers of data for Apple's new Maps app for its mobile OS.

The new iOS 6 iPhone app's heavy dose of GPS, which offers turn-by-turn directions (via Siri) and includes a new traffic service that shows you the location of accidents, courtesy of crowd-sourcing. The new 3D Maps app, which was built entirely in house, also sports a Flyover feature that displays 3D photographic maps that can be rotated using your fingers to get a true view of any location.

New info just keeps coming out...

The maps depicted on the above IOS 6 maps turns out are Microsoft Bing maps. Also included in Apple's mapping initiative is OpenStreetMap and at least 15 other mapping data providers (AND, DigitalGlobe, Intermap, LeadDog, others).

I wouldn't take what they are using now in their beta as any indication of what they will be using for a data source once the final product ships.
