Memory question please

The free memory in the 2555LMT I purchased today had about 180mb memory left when I brought it home. Now it is down to 69mb left and says "The internal storage is almost full. You may want to purchase a memory card for this device". I bought an 8gb micro SDHC card and installed the "Traffic safety camera" POI's on it.
My question is:
A. when the Garmin internal memory gets full will it automatically start storing on the memory card or is it just going to start messing up?

B. I thought when I downloaded the 2014.10 maps the Garman Express software would ask me do I want to free up memory but it didn't.

C. What can be used to free up some memory (if it doesn't automatically start saving to the card when the Garmin memory is full?

  • I did a search here without much success as I need to learn what this search engine wants entered for best results. I did a Google search "how do i free up memory on my garmin nuvi" and found the right answer previously discussed right here on this forum. I first copied the folder to my computer then I removed all but the American English voices and Help files and cleared 285mb of internal memory. Now I am going to read and find out how to move the Garmin Map to the SD card in a manner that doesn't create a nightmare with the Garmin (I hope). I am aware that when downloading a new map version and there is not enough room to do so on the Garmin it will ask me then where I wish to install it but I would like to find a way prior to that time if possible.
If anyone can point me in the right direction please do.
  • Have a look at this sticky that explains how to make more space for a map update . Follow the link to Lilla's tutorials, they explain how to split maps between your GPS and a card. While Lilla writes about a 1490 the method applies equally to all Garmin nuvis.

Thank you sussamb! I briefly looked over the links information. Looks pretty in-depth so I am saving it for a time this week when I can spend time pouring over the information there.
    I do appreciate your help

  • when the Garmin internal memory gets full will it automatically start storing on the memory card or is it just going to start messing up?
I'm not sure what "it" means in your question. Aside from recording tracks, the memory is generally being filled by "you" instead of "it". In other words, memory is being filled by an operation that you initiate, such as the download of a map update, or adding junction views, POI's, etc.

But a card is treated just like an external disk on your computer - additional mass storage that can be used if you specifically put something there. It isn't an extension of internal storage. So if you do fill the internal memory then problems will arise, just like what would happen if you fill the internal hard drive on your computer.

I meant when adding and saving an address on the Garmin itself. I added 8 and it only had 69mb of internal memory left. Let's say I was adding more and the internal memory became full, would the Garmin automatically start adding them on the SD Card, wouldn't allow you to add any more via the Garmin (not externally) or would it hang up?
  • Adding favourites takes up very little room, my current.gpx file that contains all my favourites, routes etc is only just over 1Mb.

What will make the difference are the sort of things that Boyd has already pointed out
  • Thank you Boyd. That answered my question. I just wanted to clarify my thoughts.
You guys are the greatest and I appreciate your immense help.
