How to customize the dashboard on a Nuvi 3597

Since the 3597 was released it has been our impression that it was not possible to customize a dashboard or show the multiple data fields on the map screen like you could using the Map Data Layout - More Data option available on many other Nuvi models. Well it turns out you can customize the dashboard for the 3597 to include things like Time to Destination, Direction of Travel, Distance to Via Point, etc., much the same as you could with the Map Data Layout - More Data option.

Here is how I got the customization I wanted on my 3597.

Step 1: First, you'll need to insure that you have the Trip Data feature activated on your 3597. To do this go to Settings - Map & Vehicle - Map Tools and tap the Trip Data item to place a check mark in it. Then tap Save and return to the main menu screen.

Note - you can tap any or all of the Map Tools items so that they can all be used from the 3597's map screen if required.

Step 2: From the main Menu screen, tap View Map.

Step 3: On the Map screen, tap the 3 bar icon in the lower right corner; then tap the Trip Data icon in the screen that will pop up on the Map screen.

Step 4: By default, with no destination inputted, the Nuvi will display the default information of:

- Trip A (number of miles/km since last reset)
- Trip B (number of miles/km since last reset)
- Elevation

Note - this is similar to the information available on the "speedo" screen you see if you press the Speed readout on the map screen.

Step 5: To customize these 3 fields just tap on any one of them. Doing this will open the Customize Trip Data screen. Scroll through the list and tap on any one of the available items (shown with a green plus sign) to replace the currently displayed item with the one you have selected.

When you are done making the changes to all the fields you want to alter, return to the Map screen and your fully customized "dashboard" will have been created.

To create a custom dashboard that will be used when you have a destination entered on your Nuvi.

Step 1: Enter a destination using the Where To screen and let the Nuvi calculate the route.

Step 2: On the Map screen, tap the 3 bar icon in the lower right corner and then tap the Trip Data icon in the screen that will pop up on the map screen. Note: this is only required if the Trip Data fields are not already being displayed on the map screen.

Step 3: By default, the Trip Data displayed will be:

- Trip A (number of miles/km since last reset)
- Trip B (number of miles/km since last reset)
- Elevation

Step 4: To customize these 3 fields, just tap on any one of them. Doing this will open the Customize Trip Data screen. Scroll through the list and tap on any one of the available items (shown with a green plus sign) to replace the currently displayed item with the one you have selected.

The available display data for a "destination entered" dashboard include the following items:

Arrive in
Destination Distance
Time to Turn
Distance to Turn
Max Speed
Moving Average
Overall Average
Stopped
Moving Time
Total Time
Elevation
Current Time
Time to Via Point
Via Point Distance

As you can see, along with the 3 default items, a fair bit of customization can be obtained.

When you are done making the changes to all the fields you want to alter, return to the Map screen and your fully customized "destination entered dashboard" will have been created.

For one more piece of customization you can make, tap the icon to the left of the 3 bar icon on the Map screen. Depending on whether you have a destination entered or not, you'll get a list of items that can be displayed in this field, in place of what's there now. Tap the one you want to replace what's there.

Hopefully this information will allow you to customize your 3597 so that it displays the information you saw with the More Data options on your older Nuvi that had this feature.

Note - these same procedures may also be applicable to other 2013 model Nuvi's like the 2797 for example, but have not been tested on any unit other than the 3597.

Also Note - to clear the custom dashboard from the map screen just tap the X in the top left corner of the dashboard display. To return it to the screen, tap the 3 bar icon and select Trip Data."

Here is an example of the dashboard I use showing Time to Turn (Turn In), Distance to Destination (Distance), Arrive In, and in the field to the left of the 3Bar icon, Arrival Time (Arrival):

  • T923347,

Thanks for the excellent info and the great tutorial. I would like to add one small comment for those who are interested.

The choices listed below are not available in earlier firmware. Update to the latest V3.80 firmware to have them. V3.80 has other enhancements too, so it is good to update in any case.

    Arrive in
    Destination Distance
    Time to Turn
    Distance to Turn
    Time to Via Point
    Via Point Distance
  • Thank you, t923347!

I've been searching for how to get that info on the map screen, many many thanks.

    John.

(PS: My satnav model is a Garmin nüvi 2548LMT-D. The software is Ver 3.80.)

I've replied to your long thread in the other forum where you raised this as an issue amongst others

FWIW, I linked to this thread awhile ago in our general info sticky. Since it appears to apply to more than just the 3597, I made the link more generic. Customize the dashboard on your 2013 Nuvi

Maybe someone can clarify exactly which models have this feature?
  • sussamb 805 Points
The 24x7, 24x8, 25x7 and 25x8 do. AFAIK it applies to all the 2013 models.

I just bought a Garmin Nuvi 3597 recently. I started reading another post about Custom Dashboards, until I got to the point that it couldn't be done on my model. Then I read this and I have made the change. Thank you! Now I am off to see what other tweaks can be made to the 3597.

Here is the image Jimmy was trying to post. @JimmyG: you must open the actual image itself in your browser and copy the URL. Then click the icon that looks like picture frame in the editor and paste the URL into the dialog box. If you click the "Quote" button on this post you will see the HTML code that is used to display the image.

As for your question, I don't have a 3597, but note the screenshot above was taken while he was navigating on an interstate highway. The green part is the exit number and highway name. You are not actually navigating in your screenshot, just driving around with no destination.

No .. I drove around town ... it's the sane gray color .. not the usual way with all garmin ..
Not a big deal though ..

    Thanks .

I think there is a difference in the way the 3597 displays the top bar color depending on what type of highway you are driving on and have a destination entered in your Nuvi.

I see a Gray bar when driving on a city street, as shown in this screen shot:

    image

I then see a Green bar when, on the same trip, I'm traveling on an Expressway:

    image

As Boyd points out, I'm also on an Expressway when I took the screenshot earlier in this thread.

I have also just simulated a route which takes me ONLY on city streets and the bar remains gray at all times. This seems to further support the idea that green is only used when driving on and exiting an Expressway.

Cool .. so it does change to green ...
    Thanks .
