City Navigator North America NT 2014 Problems

Just installed the city nav map onto my Garmin dakota 10 but the map is nowhere to be found on the device. When it is plugged into the computer Garmin express shows that city nav is installed but I have looked under maps on the device and it is not there. Does anyone know what to do to fix this problem because it is driving me crazy!

I don't believe Garmin Express (GE) actually polls the GPS itself as to what maps are physically on the unit. I believe it goes by if you've run the installer and the update is known to have been run by Garmin's online records (flagged in your myGarmin account)...it's not a very good way to verify that the maps have actually been installed on the unit. The maps may not have actually installed/transferred over correctly to the GPS but GE and your myGarmin account think they have and they know no better.

Try to reinstall the maps to force a reinstall to the GPS to see if they actually get installed.

I don't know if I can install them again because I've already used the product key that came with the dvd

So you installed using a physical DVD? Can you try to run the installer again? You should be able to simply re-run and proceed from there (and probably use the same product key). It's been many years since I've installed using actual physical media so I can't comment much further on that but in no way should you be limited to one install per DVD.

I ran the dvd again and it had me put in the product key and it said that the key has already been used. I looked on garmin basecamp and it shows that I have city nav installed and unlocked so I'm really confused.

I also reinstalled the maps from garmin express but it instantly said that my maps are up to date.

Then you should be able to use Basecamp to install the map on your Dakota. Hook it up to your PC and run Basecamp. Right click on your GPS in the top left hand pane, and select Install maps.

I tried using install maps on basecamp but it says that installing city nav north America is too large a file, over by 1.26 GB

Then you'll need to select a smaller region or delete some files off your Dakota. The option to select a smaller area is included in the wizard when you select 'Install maps' in Basecamp. You only have 850 Mb of memory so won't be able to install the full map.

It also explains why the map wasn't installed to your GPS.

Does the Dakota 10 not have enough storage to hold all of the north American city nav maps?

Doesn't make a lot of sense that the north America city nav is compatible while the united states only city nav isn't, plus why make it compatible when you can't even use all of the maps?

Compatible yes, but you can't install it all. This is what the Garmin site says about the DVD version:

DVD/CD: Maps purchased in this format will require a computer to use but they will allow you to plan trips on your computer, print and transfer waypoints, routes and tracks to your GPS device.2 The installation process will install the mapping and the MapSource or BaseCamp application to your computer. MapSource or BaseCamp can then be used to send maps to either your device or a blank datacard since most devices will not hold all of the data on the device. Please note that most mapping products in this format are unlocked to a single device and they are non-transferable. City Navigator maps in this format can be updated by purchasing a map update, when available.

Note the comment 'most devices will not hold all of the data on the device'

ah ha ok, so I will be able to add and remove maps whenever need be?
  • sussamb 792 Points
Yes. You have the complete map on your PC, so you can add/remove as necessary.
