Mini GPS logger for birds

I'm looking for a mini GPS logger to attach to birds. I run a project in Nepal called The Parahawking Project where we train birds of prey to fly with paragliders. We use the birds to guide to where the thermals are. I want to be able to record the flight data of the birds of the course of several months where i can study their flight patterns and behaviours.

The birds are quite big so can carry up to about 50g, I need to record speed, distance, altitude, all the usual stuff, i need to to export to a GPX file so i can upload onto this site -

It needs to be self powered but it doesn't need to run much more than 30 mins, since the birds are trained they can be recalled at any time. I need the data to be record as often as possible, say every 1 sec or something.

more about my project here -

Grateful for any suggestions of recommendations or if there are any GPS companies out there that would like to get involved in this project on a sponsorship basis, i'd like to hear from you.

Thanks in advance

I think you'd do better calling/writing the major GPS manufacturers and asking them. I don't know this as fact, but I'm sure that 99.9 percent of the users here are only familiar with recreational type GPS's.

Any one else that answers stating that they have the perfect unit for you may just be taking advantage of an opportunity, and your ignorance of what's available for you.

Most of the major GPS manufacturers are likely recreational oriented, but I'm sure some of them must know some of the companies that deal with what you need.

And what about you colleagues in similar ongoing research projects? Can you not get info from them?
  • Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

I don't have a budget for a really expensive system such as these large wildlife organisations use. Also i don't need live tracking, i just need a data logger but a small one that will record altitude and export a GPX or an IGC file. I actually found this since I posted here - - I'm thinking it might do the trick but ideally would like someone who has one to test it, I've asked on the RC Groups forums as it seems a popular GPS logger amongst RC enthusiasts.

    I'll keep digging, thanks again.
