JANUARY 4, 2017

Today we announce the inReach SE+ and inReach Explorer+, the first Garmin devices with inReach satellite communication technology, which was acquired through the purchase of DeLorme in early 2016. The new inReach SE+ and inReach Explorer+ have Pole to Pole global Iridium® satellite coverage for two-way messaging and SOS alerting anywhere in the world. Both models include a built-in GPS for location tracking and basic navigation, and the inReach Explorer+ adds preloaded TOPO maps, compass, barometric altimeter and accelerometer.

From backcountry treks to international adventures, these new inReach devices provide communication, location sharing, navigation and critical SOS functions for anyone who loves getting away from it all, no matter if it’s on land, water or in the sky, all while providing peace of mind for friends and family back home.

Interesting that they are using so much of the DeLorme infrastructure here. I get it-- the acquisition is recent and therefore not much time for development other than the Garmin logo. I'd expect future products in this line to ditch more of DeLorme's software and end up with a product that incorporates the messenger hardware into a more Garmin like product.

Did they ever incorporate Navigon into a Garmin Like product? ;)

Yeah, that is a strange one too. The Navigon brand lives on, as do many of their apps.

Here's something strange that was just pointed out in a thread at groundspeak; these devices are not compatible with Garmin maps and don't have memory card slots. Kind of surprising - see the fine print at the bottom of the page here: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/561269/pn/010-01735-10#overview

"Preloaded DeLorme TOPO maps are not compatible with other Garmin devices. Other Garmin maps not compatible with this device."

Tim is right, this really isn't a "Garmin like" product. ;)
