Nuvi 765T touch screen not responding

Hello All. New to the forum but not to Garmin. I've had a Garmin GPS since 2006 and have had the Nuvi 765T since 2008. I've gone thru a couple of them and haven't upgraded because it's the last unit Garmin made that had a bulit in MP3 player. I don't use it for music. I use it for audio books. I drive a great deal and the books are more entertaining than satellite radio (which I also have), but I digress.

My problem is the touch screen has stopped responding. Happened a few days ago. This is not a new event as it has, in the past, done much the same thing. I'll touch the screen and a different option opens or I'll touch one letter and another appears. Calibrating the screen has always worked and has always solved the issure. I had to factory reset the unit once, but that hasn't happened again.

This time however, nothing fixes it. I can get to the calibration screen and the screen shows "press the dot" but the dot can't be pressed. Nothing happens. I can't do a factory reset because when the unit asks if I really want to do this, nothing happens when I press the yes button. I have taken the unit apart using the tools I got with a replacement battery to make sure all the connections hadn't loosened, but that did nothing. There are only two that I can find. The connection to the battery and the connection to the speaker. So basically the unit is dead in the water unless someone knows a trick I don't. Garmin tech support wasn't helpful because they no longer make or support the unit and their only suggestion (after being surprised I still had a unit that old), was to buy a newer model. I don't want to do that unless I absolutely have to. I like this unit. Garmin no longer offers the American Male Voice I use or any unit with an MP3 Player. Also it is hard wired into the 12 volt system in my car with about 7 inches of cable visible that plugs into the window mount. The newer units don't use the same connectors, so I'd have to take the dash apart again to wire for the newer model.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My only idea is to check with this company, they show $60 to replace the screen (interestingly, they are using glass screens). The owner is a member here at GPSReview but has not posted for a long time.

You have made a good case for why you want to continue using the old device. But.... really? There should be many other options for your needs in 2018 and sooner or later, it's time to move on. :)

Well, thank you for letting me know it's time to move on. You sound like my first wife. But I'm perfectly content with my rotary phone; my push mower; my Philco B/W television; my Commodore 64 computer; my 300lb microwave oven; my 57 Edsel and my Garmin 765T, so I'll check with this company and see what happens.

Another option would be to try and find a used working 765T that you can buy, preferably one that has an active lifetime map subscription. Do you use the Bluetooth feature on your 765T? If not, you could also look for a 755T.

You're welcome. ;) I did make a suggestion for how you might get it fixed and also used a "smiley". Sorry if you were offended.

@alanb - I suppose it depends on what a used one costs. The OP said he'd already "gone thru a couple of them". If you could get it checked over and a new screen for $60, that seems like a safer bet than another old one with possible issues. Unless the used ones are really cheap, of course.

Agree with you Boyd, but I know it is sometimes difficult to get through the Sharcnet backlog. At times they will not take on new business until they get their backlog cleared. That said, I haven't read any posts recently about them.
  • Don't misunderstand. I wasn't offended. I just have a bizzare sense of humor. This is my third only because I kicked the first one off the roof of a parking garage as it fell from my hand and I raised my foot to dampen the fall. My foot caught the edge and it rolled end-over-end right off the roof. The second ended up being shattered as a rock from a dump truck crashed thru my window. Other than that they worked great. Somebody on eBay is selling one for $400. He must be very proud of it, or he knows how scarse the are, I bought the third one from a guy in Texas who had a case of them (brand new) and he sold them for Garmin retail price on eBay. I didn't ask where he bought/found/picked up/retreived/ or otherwise obtained a case of Garmin 765's.
