"Suddenly" no maps on Nuvi 2250 LMT (Australia)

Hi,

First time posting and in need of help! I suppose that that's not an uncommon situation.

My trusty Nuvi 2250 all of a sudden became not so trusty recently when I was attempting to add a new favourite. (I have added favourites before and never had a problem.) The issue happened at the same time as I installed a map update, but I don't recall which I did first - map update or add the favourite. I have the message "FM Traffic provider database is missing. Go to www.garmin.com/webupdater Press OK

Apart from the fact that that address doesn't work, "webupdater" hasn't been able to help me fix the problem. Webupdater doesn't see the unit. I have a blank map screen with a position indicator. Everything else seems to work. It records distances and speed. I just can't use it to give me directions or see where I am.

Garmin tried to help for about 10 minutes, but after that, they said that because it was an older unit, it wasn't supported and I would have to buy a new GPS. Well, I like this small unit and they don't make any non-widescreen units any longer, apparently.

I've always had the Nuvi running off a Mac. I'm currently running OS X 10.14.2

I think that I've covered everything that you might need to know in order to help me, but if you need to ask me further questions, please go ahead.

Thanks for any help,
Andrew

Check in Settings if any map is shown. If it is check its selected. If nothing there run Express again and reinstall the map.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry for my late reply.

The device isn’t showing up in Garmin Express. I’m not sure why.

However, when the device powers up, the device shows ‘loading maps’ and that appears to take a similar length of time to when the device was working properly.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

Can you answer the first part though? Look in Settings, Map and Vehicles, myMaps on your device. What is listed there?

Even though your nuvi 2250 isn't recognized by Garmin Express or WebUpdater, does it still mount as a drive when connected to the computer? If it does, check on the amount of free space in internal storage. If there is very little free space (less than a few MB), you may need to delete some unnecessary files.

My apologies. I was trying to work out where this was. I didn't think about on the device!

'myMaps' is located in a different menu to where you said, but that's irrelevant, I think. myMaps is blank - there's just empty space there.

No, it doesn't mount as a drive. It did once, briefly - I think that I saw it flash up on the screen - but since then, nothing.

If myMaps is blank that's why you're not seeing maps and if it doesn't mount as a drive then there is little you can try. You could try a master reset and then see if it will mount as a drive but I'm not hopeful.

    Thanks for your quick reply!

Are there specific instructions for the master reset for different models?

I'm also wondering what Garmin could do, should they be so inclined to help. Do you know?

A couple of other questions have sprung to mind.

I'm wondering why it says. 'Maps Loading' on the startup screen if, in fact, nothing is loading. As I said earlier, it appears to be taking a similar length of time to do the startup procedure.

What could have been the cause?

    Thanks for all your help.

See this thread for reset instructions

Give it a try, it fixes a variety of odd problems. If that doesn't work though, and if you cannot get the device to show on your computer, try a different USB cable and try a different USB port. You could also try a different computer. Make sure it is directly connected to the computer and not a USB hub.

If none of this works, you have very few options left. There is some user-contributed software that can be used to try and "wake it up", but now you're into the realm of hackers, and will also need a PC because there are no Mac versions.

Eventually you may have to face the fact that it's just dead. Garmin won't help, as you've already learned. Even if they wanted to help, they are not going to repair a device that old (the Nuvi 2250 was introduced in 2011). If it were a current model, they probably would have just swapped it for another one, but that is no longer an option.

Hope you get it working again, but unfortunately, your options are rather limited. I will say, however, the fact that it starts up and you can actually access the menus, is a hopeful sign that your problem may just be a corrupt or missing map file.
