is it possible to do this? and if so, what brand/model gps would accept this
type of setup? any help would be great.

I'm not 100% sure I understand you question. But there is a product called the Garmin GVN-52, also known as the Garmin "black box" which gives you the functionality of a StreetPilot GPS that you connect to your own display. Typically that display would be an existing in-dash display, however I imagine you could hook up your own display as well.

sorry if i wasn't clear. i meant to be able to hook up a 14" or 15" or even a 17" lcd display to a vga output on the back of a GPS device. Just something bigger so i don't have to strain to see a little 3.5" display.

The device I mentioned above might do that. Otherwise I'm not sure of any devices that offer that functionality other than software programs designed to be run from a PC.
