Does the Nuvi memory get fragmented?

I am well aware that PC hard drives become fragmented over time (and sometimes not a lot of time).

Does the storage in a Nuvi or other GPS get similarly fragmented, and if so, is it safe to run a defrag program on it?

Your nuvi uses flash memory which won't benefit from a defrag utility used on disc arrays.
  • gatorguy nailed it.

Flash memory does not get "fragmented" in the same sense as a mechanical hard drive. Read times for flash are identical no matter where the data is located on the drive. Regular hard drives have to move and spin to locate the data on different areas so fragmentation does hurt performance.

That's the wonderful thing about this forum - you ask a question and, "quick as a flash" you have an answer.
