  • Finally got it together to call support and work through the update. Despite what that web page said, I was assured that the only thing that would fit my XL 340S was a zoned map. They had me delete the current map and walked me through the download …
  • ... See here to determine whether a full USA_Canada map is available for the 340S: http://www.tomtom.com/en_ca/drive/maps-services/shop/travel-map/usa-canada/ According to that website, the USA_Canada map is available for the 340S. Hooray! Will def…
  • Nope. Version Information reports "Map: 'USA_Canada_and_Mexico_P' v850.2784" :(
  • I think I managed to upgrade my map without having a TomTom rep walk me through it. It wasn't easy. I tried several times to use the HOME "Update my device" menu choice. This led me to a U.S.-Canada-Mexico map, size 2100+ KB, which did not fit on my…
  • Finally got around to calling TomTom support. This was first-level support and the representative was very helpful. He processed my refund, but also informed me that my device came with lifetime maps -- who knew? Better still, he offered to try to w…
  • So it's been two weeks and TomTom never contacted me. They had no problem taking my money, though. :-O
  • Still nothing from TomTom. Guess it's time to look into a new Garmin.
  • Thanks for the info. Looks like I'm out of luck. Too bad, because it's still a perfectly good device apart from the map. Still nothing from TomTom, BTW.
  • what did you do when gps's were not around? I got lost a lot. I got into arguments with the wife because she wanted me to stop and ask directions and I wanted to keep driving. When I did ask, the directions I got were confusing or just plain wrong.…
  • All newer models are such that the user no longer has access to the file system on the device. Meaning no ability to tweak pronunciations, create custom color schemes, and all that good stuff? What a drag!
  • Update: I took a 75-mile trip this weekend and the device behaved normally. So it looks like the software upgrade is a keeper.

  • That is one method or, if you happen to know the previous application version, I could probably supply a direct link to TT's servers to get the app. Thanks. Hopefully it won't be necessary.

  • Now I won't worry if my unit occasionally pops out of the mount and falls on the floor. :P
  • Sounds like a lemon. Is it too late to take it back?
  • Try this (but only after you've done an Explorer, not Home, backup of your device): Connect your TomTom to the computer. In a text editor, open a file named "roadnrEnglishUS.lex" located in subfolder DATA in folder LoquendoTTS. (Fully-qualified pat…
  • Glad it worked out for you.
  • Interesting. I've had a TomTom XL 340S for seven months and like it a lot. You're right about off-road locations, though; it's not good at orienting you if you're starting out, for example, from the parking lot of a shopping center. Basically, you'v…
  • In the menus, go to TomTom Services >> Safety Alerts. If the option to "Enable alerts" is available, select it (the option then becomes "Disable alerts"). If the option already says "Disable alerts", then something else is going on. P.S. I ha…
  • Santa's not going to find any satellite locks inside O-sama's cave !! Well, he's near the entrance. I sometimes get two or three bars in my apartment, if I'm near a window. My question is, what make and model is he using? I think it would be one to …
  • Thanks for the update. Great "Magellan" story!
  • Well, carpeperdiem -- three years later -- what GPS did you get your wife, and how did it turn out? (My wife has similar navigational abilities. Fortunately for all concerned, she never learned to drive.)
  • You may want to check what's available here: http://www.mountguys.com/category_s/1591.htm
  • The biggest value of EPT is when the surrounding buildings are 20 stories or higher. For example the 930 will work in midtown, the 340 is probably hopeless. Interesting. Just yesterday, I used the 340 to navigate to the Waldorf Astoria. Reception w…
  • A quick tap on a body of water on my nuvi 760 will usually give me the name. But it does require a screentap (browse map) instead of being displayed at all times. I guess I could try that on the TT. ... (tries) ... Hmm, browsed the map a bit and I d…
  • I don't think many people would want the GPS to announce the name of every creek they drive over. :) Aw c'mon, really? Maybe it could just say "Ahoy!" or "Thar she blows!". :D Seriously, I don't want an announcement. Just wanna be able to glance a…
  • I 'SEE' water on my maps as driving by them.... Yeah, I see it too. My question as I'm driving is, What is it? I want the equivalent of the sign on the bridge that says the name of the river you're crossing. But, as the song says, you can't always …
  • Sorry, no........ I figured that would be the answer. Thanks for the info. re overlays.
  • Lane assist is one of the best features of GPS. Don't deprive yourself of it.
  • See if the information in this link helps: http://www.tomtomforums.com/tomtom-voices/18323-number-enunciation.html I've implemented the recommended changes to roadnrEnglishUS.rex. They work. Thanks again! I'm also getting good results with my chan…
  • See if the information in this link helps: http://www.tomtomforums.com/tomtom-voices/18323-number-enunciation.html Bingo! That's the thread I was looking for. Had totally forgotten it was on the TomTom site. Thanks so much for the fast reply. I'm …
  • My TomTom One tells me in advance when a turn is coming, it will say turn in one quarter mile, then turn when you get there. For what it's worth, I have a TomTom XL 340S and it does the same. Besides the speaking instructions, a glance at the lower …
  • Nope, only the 9x models have EPT, It's a hardware solution so no software kludge will work.......... Ah, okay. Glad the folks who shelled out several hundred more than me are getting something for their money. :) So ... what's my TT up to in the t…
  • The EasyPort mount on my XL 340S fell apart after one week of use. Based on this experience, I decided that I wouldn't bother replacing it and just moved on to a Darcon vent mount (which of course meant spending extra money). The vent mount is okay …
  • Want to know how to make a screenshot of something on your TomTom device? While there isn't an official way, TomTom let us in on a little secret this past summer: 1) Connect your TomTom via USB. 2) Create a folder in the root of the drive called '…
  • Any of the Garmin's would be more usable "off-road" than TomTom's. My TT map (latest version) shows the named roads inside a private cemetery in my locale. But when I set a route to a particular location within the cemetery, the device reports I've …
  • I'm almost tempted to try to get a replacement for my broken mount, just to see what happens. My unit was a gift, so I don't have a receipt, original or otherwise. By the way, if you purchased the unit online using a credit card or Paypal, what con…

  • I'd also consider a tune up of the car is vibrating is that extensive.. I kinda skipped that suggestion..... It's a new car (400 miles on the odometer). The vibration is very subtle. You can't feel it, but you can see it (sometimes) i…
  • Vibration should not cause an issue as the device uses flash memory, not a hard drive. Thanks. I thought so, but wanted to make sure.
  • You'll find it in the second screen of the Status Bar Preference. Fourth choice. Why, of course! How did I miss it? Thanks, dhn, for setting me straight. (Just don't check all six, no room on status bar. I uncheck 'remaining time') Roger that. At le…
