If you upgrade the firmware to Navcore 8 from Navcore 7 (it's free and the latest version is 8.3, which is problematic in certain areas) and map version 8x (the latest is 8.15 for North America) and which you may have to pay for depending upon how long you've had your unit, then you have effectively transformed a 720 in functionality into a 730.
Cautionary notes:
1. If you do not need or want map version 8.15 then you do not need to upgrade to firmware 8.3.
2. If you do want map version 8.15, then you MUST upgrade to firmware 8.3 first.
3. Always make an Explorer, not home, backup prior to any updating of maps and/or firmware.
There is an on going issue as to whether refurbs are entitled to the Latest Map guarantee. (1 free map update within 30 days of purchase of unit).
I think the best thing for you to do is contact TT Support (call, don't email. The number is: 866-486-6866). Tell them where you got it and when and see if they'll make map 8.15 available for you. If they DO allow the LMG, then be prepared to send a scan, fax or photo of your sales invoice.

Now that I've got the latest app. and map for my 720 is there anything I need to do to set up IQ Routing or is it done auto? Doesn't look like there is.
Sounds like you should be set. After you plan a route and are looking at the route summary screen does it say something like 'Fastest route (Weekday)'?
OK.......Here is my situation. After some hassle with Overstock.com, I finally got my new 720 unit.
1. I upgraded all the softwares including upgrading to 8.3 on my unit.
2. It says that I have maps 7.1 on the unit, yet when I ask to use the latest map guarantee it says that my unit has all the latest maps! And obviously this is incorrect.
I need to have the newest map because I live in a new housing development and my address isn't on the old maps. I'm guessing that I need to call TT AGAIN (long story....Overstock originally sent me a refurb instead of a new one). Or does anybody know how to fix this without having to talk to someone that I can't understand.
I am so totally frustrated with this whole thing that I'm wondering if I will ever get this thing working!

The aspect of Home's Latest Map guarantee is flakey at best. As the other poster mentioned, your 7.1 map is indeed over a year old. The newest is 8.15.
Call, do not email, Support at 866-486-6866. Be prepared to send a scan, fax or photo of your sales receipt to prove your unit is <30 days old and they will set you up to dl the 8.15 map for free.
(all the above is assuming the reburb you may have gotten is still entitled to the LMG).
mikegray..........When I plug my GPS into my computer and do the "Use latest map guarantee" pulldown from the Tools menu and click on it, it says "You have the latest map". Not a person, but the TT Home.
dhn.......Actually Overstock sent me a replacement unit that is new (theoretically......at least when I asked Home for the update it didn't tell me it was expired this time like it did the last time), and I have returned the refurbed one to them. I paid them for a new one and that is what I demanded they send me. So I guess I'm going to have to call TT again. It is through TT customer support that I found out the other one was a refurb. My hassle with them is the typical off-shore support in that I could barely understand the person that I talked to the first time. Thanks for the info.

Are you talking about TomTom support being 'offshore'?
If so, 'offshore' for TomTom is northern New York State.
Sorry, figured it was offshore since the person I talked to before had such a heavy foreign accent that I could barely understand him. I had to keep asking him to repeat things. Definately was not a NY accent! Hopefully I'll get someone this time that I can understand.
Update...........I did call TT and got the map upgrade. Had to take a pic of the invoice and send it to them. They were having a bunch of problems on their end, however, because I changed the email address on the account of the old, returned unit so that I could use my current email for the new one and for some reason their system wasn't recognizing my new account at first, but all of a sudden it started working for them. Later I got an error message while downloading it that I didn't have enough space on my unit to install the new map, and had to call again, but they had me delete the original map and then finish the install. Forgive me, but this is my first GPS, so I am really in the dark here.
Anyway, it appears that I now have 8.3 firmware and 8.15 maps, so I guess I am updated now. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed because my housing development is STILL not on the new map. It keeps saying that I am on an unnamed street, but this street has had a name for over a year. None of the streets, except for the main one, are on the maps, so I guess I just won't have a "Home" address in the unit. However, the new zip code is now there and wasn't there before. Now I just have to play some.
Anyone knows when the version 810 maps for the 720 became available? Did the latest version just come out recently? I bought a 720 two months ago that came with the 710 version but was always told that my maps were up-to-date whenever hooked up to TomTom Home. Therefore I just assumed the Latest Maps Guarantee didn't apply to my device.
I bought the 810 map in September of this year. I think it came out in late August and then 815 came out in November.
But no v8 maps would be offered via lmg if firmware 8x were not installed on the unit. Indeed, for map 815, you require firmware 8.3.
You are between aq rock and a hard place, I think. You could call support and plead your case that the LMG said you had the latest maps. (Home is notorious for being wrong about this). But, Support may, just may ask if you were offered firmware updates when you logged into Home and, if so, did you accept them and get moved to firmware level 8 (where, as I said, you should have then been offered version 8 maps).
Call support and be pleasant but firm and plead your case for getting the latest map for free. (number is 866-486-6866).

dhn, thank you for the tip and prompt response...I'll try my luck with TT support. I did update my firmware to 8.3 about a month ago. But still no map update was offered. In fact, TomTom Home still says my map is up to date. Obviously the map update check is not working properly.
violio...........I had the same problem, home says it's up to date but thanks to this site I knew it wasn't. Called TT support, emailed them a .jpg of my sales slip and got the update.
Daughter has the same problem, but unfortunately she didn't tell me until Sunday when I told her that she did NOT have the updated map. I'm having her call support and hope that she can get it because she is down here in PA for Christmas and her slip is up at her house in NY and her 30 days runs out before she gets back. I'm going to have her call TT support hoping that because of the software glitch they will allow her to send it to them after she gets back, but want her to get it on the record before the 30 day deadline.
Obviously this is a glitch in Home somewhere and I really think that TT needs to get it fixed or else give people some leeway in it because of their error.
The "glitch" is there most of the time. Months ago I had the same experience. Little incentive for TomTom to give away a map, thus the reason the feature often fails IMHO. They never fail to let you know on TTHome when a new map is available to buy.
I called TT suport and explained that my 720 came with map version 710 and I missed the LMG offer to update my map due to the glitch in TomTom Home. They first told me that I must have a refurbished unit if I purchased it in October that came with the 710 version, therefore the LMG doesn't apply. After explaining that it was a brand new unit for which I paid full price, they granted me access to download the new version (815) within an hour. I did have to send them a scanned copy of my receipt as proof. So kudos to TomTom for recognizing shortfalls in their products and providing appropriate compensation.
Thank you all for your tips and information. I wouldn't have known I missed out on the map update without this forum.
"The new map (8.15) will provide IQ2 routing with f/w 8.3.
IQ2 = takes into consideration the time of day, not just the day of the week so the planning s/b more precise."
I have a TT720 for 2 days and trying to set it up. I have not yet tried it live in the car. I have the 8.3 and 8.15 map but do not see the IQ button in preferences that you memtioned. I am doing this connected to the computer. Will I see it that way, and do I need the optional traffic program for this to work and show up.
Disconnect the unit from the computer. Now, Preferences-->Planning Preferences (pg 5), the next screen shows the options and 'iq routes' button should be at the bottom of the screen.
