What size SDHC card for TomTom 730T? Wed Dec 10, 2008 4:44 pm
I'm getting not so concrete answers from Tom Tom support about exactly how big of a SDHC card my 730T will support.
First the girl said it won't take SDHC cards - then she said it would but only 4gb - when I pressed her about 8gb, 16gb or 32gb SDHC cards she did say it could "accept" an 8gb SDHC but it may be problematic. Not exactly reassuring tech support answers.
Can anyone using a 8gb, 16gb or 32gb SDHC card with a Tom Tom comment before I order one?
Firmware 8.3 allows for the use of greater than 4 gigs for read AND write. So, yep, 8, 16 or even 32 giggers would work with that firmware.
Interestingly, apparently it is the bootloader with that firmware that allows for the change and, even if a user rolls back the firmware, the newer bootloader is still in effect so that >4 giggers would then be allowed with the lower firmware version.

I installed a 4GB Class 2 SDHC on my 720 with 8.204 firmware. It is working perfectly. However, I have read users were only copying their maps to the SDHC card. I actually moved everything from my internal memory to my SDHC. Now my internal memory is empty. I have 1.8GB remaining on my SDHC. Is this a bad idea? Should I keep only the maps on SDHC?
You can do whatever you'd like. Some have done exactly as you have so that when they boot up in Home, they KNOW to always select the sd card for updating since everything is there. Others split (for the moment, I just have my map on the card).
With x20 and x30 models, there really isn't a right answer, especially considering with f/w 8.3 that sdhc cards greater than 4 gigs are ok.
A 720 with the latest application (8.351) can take up to 32 gig sdhc cards.
But, trust me, most of the large sdhc cards advertised on ebay are Chinese fraud knockoffs.
I really can't conceive of your needing that large a sized card. Probably a 8-gig sdhc card would suffice, 16-gig if you have a ton of mp3s. Get the fastest you can afford. Class 6 if you can. No lower than class 4.
By coincidence, I just bought the NZ map for myself 10 minutes ago as my wife is going there on business for 5 weeks starting Tuesday.
Tap the satellite bars on your unit and the next screen shows the application installed. Tap the version number and the following screen shows the map installed and its version number.
I've been lucky enough to join her on two trips to NZ and I've loved every minute there. You are fortunate to live in such a beautiful country.
You need to connect to Home with your 720. It should check that a newer application is available. If so, download and install. The one offered should be 8.351. Then you could use a 32-gig sdhc card.
With a 7.481 application, the max you can use easily in 4-gigs.
