TomTom 720 - Availablility Fri Aug 10, 2007 9:33 pm
I called two Best Buy stores and neither of them have even heard of the Go 720. One Customer Service agent asked me for a SKU but the 720 isn't even on the website. Does anyone have the SKU so I can try again. Is it possible for the product to be in stock and not in their system?
I believe their SKU number was 8400198 and the product ID was 1179877502890. Sometime in the last 24-48 hours or so the item did disappear from their website.

The day that I bought mine, about 10 days ago, I first went to the BB web site to buy and hold it for pickup at the local store. Their web site said that they, the company nit he local store, were temporarily out of stock. I rushed down to the local store anyway and they still had three units plus another one on display. But your correct, Their web site acts as though they have never heard of the 720. The European newsgroups seem to indicate that stores over there have plenty in stock. No one in Canada seems to have any either. Strange.
The SKU worked! My local store doesn't have any but the other store I called yesterday magically found 2 units when I gave them the SKU. Interstingly, the CS agent at the local store said "the SKU is active but I don't even see any units at our distribution center to pull from".

I called Provantage where I had ordered mine from on July 31 and they gave me an "ETA" of August 31. I assume ETA is when THEY expect to get them.
I think Best Buy may have gotten some sort of advanced shippment because Circuit City never heard of them.
Also most of the companies that make peripherals (e.g. clip mounts, bicycle mounts) for GPS units don't seem to have any for the 720. I was wondering if size wize the 720 is identical to any of the other TomTom units?
Looks like the warehouse is backordered. I checked a few stores local to me. Three still had them in stock and three have sold out. It sounds like Best Buy got an early shipment and have quickly sold out at many locations, but haven't yet received additional units.
I just checked, it's sold out of every store in the Boston area. Looks like TT is on their way to another great quarter. Now I just wish somebody would get the new 720 cases in stock!

It didn't work automatically with mine either. They weren't going to do it until I pointed to the last line under "Appliances & More" where it lists navigation hardware as one of the categories. They just double checked that it wasn't on sale and the manager said not a problem after that. Maybe because it was such a new item it wasn't working correctly. I've found that Best Buy has the worst coupons, they never work and you always have to argue with them.
I don't know if you could go back and complain now unless you could talk to the same person that remembered you when you were there. It can't hurt that's for sure, it's a pretty big savings....well, after tax it was a $20 savings.
Just got a message from Amazon that they'll be shipping my 720 earlier than expected, and that I should have it Friday. Also, I've called around and Fry's has it in stock both online and in stores.
Disco Scottie: you should go back and talk to a manager and ask for your discount if you still have the receipt. I used the same coupon and the sales agent was not able to scan it and then pointed out that he couldn't find the appropriate category. I asked him what he was looking for and he replied "GPS Devices". In all the years that I have been getting Best Buy coupons I have never seen such a category. I then asked him to speak to a manager and he was immediately told to take 12% off. Good luck!

I assume that everyone saw the Best Buy ad for the TT 720 at full retail last weekend so at least THEY must have them again. I've yet to see one at Circuit City or anywhere else.
But with the 4th quarter '07 availability of the new TT 920 with European maps and a few other features for only $100 more, I cancelled my July 31 order from Provantage (that still didn't have a ship date). Heck even at $100 more, it is still cheaper than the high end Garmins.
I don't always follow this advice (especially when new stuff is way over priced) but someone once said that "You're seldom sorry that you went with the best" and from what I've read, the TT 920 should be the best because it is built mostly with TT 720 architecture.
