Does your 720 have one ot two holes for its MIC... Thu Aug 23, 2007 4:18 am
After reading a lot about how many people are having Mic issues, and returning the units for a new one with good results. I am one of the unfortunate ones with a bad mic, but with all the pics of the device Ive noticed something.
The unit seems to have two holes where the mic is, and mine only has one. Im wondering if there are two 'versions' if you will, of the 720 and the one with two holes might possibly have a different mic involved. Just a thought.
Anyway, if you have a GOOD mic, do you have one or two holes?
First let's define a couple of things so that everyone is on the same page. I'm going to reference the manual, and describe what is there
Across front of the device, above the screen is a silver "brow". On the left side of the brow is an oval opening for the microphone. On the right side of the brow there is another oval opening for the light sensor.
In the pic above, there are two holes where the Mic is. Its probably a longshot, but I just noticed it thinking maybe some TT units shipped with one hole, and others with two, some having a different Mic.
Interesting. That is a Euro centric site, so perhaps there is a difference with that model, but worth looking into. Nice catch! I'll see if I can dig up/confirm any info.
I'd always wondered what this meant (here: http://www.tomtom.com/products/product.php?ID=373&Category=0&Lid=1 following the hands-free link):
"Lets your GO double a hands free car kit via Bluetooth® technology, with dual microphone support and build-in high performance speaker (full duplex)."
I guess there was a plan for some clever, but not feasible, mic technology/
Anyway, to add to the discussion about Europe v USA design: I have a UK unit and it only has one hole either side on "the brow" - per the manual, one is the mic, the other the light sensor.
I am on a replacement 720 because the first one had a faulty internal mic. It seems this second one is ok - I've even a had an okish hands-free call with the roof down. Like others, I would still have preferred the option of an external mic, and didn't realise until I bought it that it wasn't available.
Does anyone know if the "car connect" unit might allow for another mic input?
I got some clarification on this today. Some of the early samples of the 720 had two holes. However one hole was taken away to make the design more symmetrical. There are still two microphones, both now using the same hole. There was no other hardware change, it was a cosmetic change. So it sounds like no devices shipped with two holes, and indeed the later prototypes I saw only had one hole as well.
