red x on TomTom 720 screen won't start & reset doesn't w Tue Aug 28, 2007 12:41 am
Hi, I just purchased my first ever GPS..a. TOMTOM 720, 3 hours ago.
It worked fine during the drive home from the store, about 2 hours. After installing the software on my computer, but not the updated 2.0 version everything was fine. I deleted a few of the french/spanish voices off the internal memory and installed a couple of new ones from the cd and online.
I also tried to add USretailer POI...without success. Now, I get a red x on the screen all the time and it won't load up past the initial tomtom/drum start up. I have re-installed all the voices that I removed, plus re-installed the original software on my PC. And of course, I've hit re-set dozens of times. Ideas or thoughts?
That typically happens as a result of an application update that either downloaded an incorrect version of the application for the device, or the application update didn't complete before the device was removed, or the application it downloaded was somehow corrupt.
Try deleting any application updates that were downloaded into HOME, then delete the application from the device, then download the new application update for your device, and install it to the device. Give it a good wait after it says it has finished installing the application update and then be sure to use the software eject button within HOME before disconnecting the drive.
Otherwise, you probably have a call to TT support in your future where they will likely have you download a utility to clear the flash on the drive and reinstall the app on the device after that.
Hi Tim, and thanks for the quick reply. If nothing else, buying a GPS is/was alot easier thanks to you and all your help. I uninstalled the application and reinstalled it...everything is fine now...well almost!
Version 2.0 of home apparently has a few bugs still with xulrunner exec probs when using "operate my go". But that's something that I'm sure Tomtom will fix. Again, thanks for all your help and amazingly fast response!!! By the way...my bluetooth phone works well, the FM workswell, and if i connect to my Honda's MP3 plug, the music quality is great. It actually boosts volume substantially.
If you delete your Bluetooth connection to your phone on the device, then connect your device to TomTom HOME, you should be able to operate it again without the xulrunner exec errors. Then just reestablish the Bluetooth connection and it should work find from that point forward without needing to delete/pair the phone again.
Should everything on the device off the doc, match when I operate it on the PC?
Because when I change the car symbol on the 720, then I plug it in and operate it, its got the default arrow back there, as well as some other preferences. Pretty irritating.
Jeez, this stuff is seriously flawed. Now, when I plugged the 720 into the doc and operated it on my PC, like I said it showed the defauly symbol again, and the all blue night screen. So from my PC, I swapped them back to the way I wanted it, then took the device off the dock and turned it on, and what do you know? The default symbol and the blue night screen are back.
Programs like Garmin WebUpdater, and TomTom Home should be banned.
They killed so many devices.
I use copy/paste and treat the GPS like a SD card instead, and religiously clicking on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' green arrow before disconnecting.
Yes, please, the first thing to do is making a backup, or two !
This happened to me what happened was I was using a Mac and Mac spotlight messed it up go ahead and disable spotlight or use a Windows computer and then uninstall and reinstall the application
