PostActivate "Speech Recognition" in TomTom GO720  Sun Oct 21, 2007 12:24 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

I just had my GO720 for few days and was disappointed with the fact that Australian version will not have the Speech Recognition feature.

While playing around, found that the feature was "disabled" instead of removed.

There still another "backdoor" we can use Smile

In common way, it is advised to tap in below sequences:

Main Menu - Navigate To... - Address - Spoken Address

Unfortunately the Spoken Address (or Spoken Address (dialogue)) buttons are grayed (disabled).

In order to use this feature, try this:

Main Menu - Change Preferences - Quick Menu Preferences

then tick the Navigate To Spoken Address (dialo...). It will then be displayed in your Quick Menu shortcuts in navigation view.

Not sure it will works with all disabled units, but mine does.

Good luck!

--------------------------------------

Another way is to navigate as follow:

Main Menu - Navigate To - Address - [either City Center, Street and house number or Crossing or intersection] (except Postcode)

Check if you have this icon at bottom right: http://img147.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=56870_DSC00052_0Small9_122_830lo.JPG

Glad to hear that is working for you. The Voice Recognition feature is only available in a limited number of European countries at this point. I tried your trick but 'Navigate to Spoken Address' isn't an option I can add to the Quick Menu in my 720.

Great to hear it is working for you though!

Not sure if it is caused by bug in my 720 software as I still struggling to:

1. Change the car icon
2. Activate the Text To Speech

and both end up with no luck Crying or Very sad

Any more detailed info on what you've tried with respect to changing the car icon?

As for TTS, you need to be using a voice labeled 'Computer' for TTS to work. Not all voices installed on your device are TTS.

Change car icon:

1. Read in the other post that the car icon will change only in 3D, tried but failed.
2. Even tried to upload my own icon (80x80 pixel BMP) and select this one as default, failed.
3. Delete all the other car icons and leave only my preference icon, failed.
4. Rename my own-create icon to -default.bmp and the existing blue arrow icon name to "blue arrow.bmp" (was named as "-default.bmp"), failed.
5. Was using Custom Map Color and suspect this could be the cause, set back to original Map Color, failed.
6. Tried the RESET TO FACTORY SETTING and hardware RESET button, no difference... failed.

Seems like I have no Computer Voice in my 720 Confused only 2 males (Ken/Australian, Tim/UK) and 1 female (Jane/UK)

So it seems to accept the change, but simply doesn't change?

Yes, it accept the change as I can see the status at top-right (displayed for few seconds and gone) but does not change.

As for TTS, I tried to scroll LEFT or RIGHT and finally reached some "disabled" (or uninstalled) voices which requires me to "Install from CD or download from www.tomtom.com"... should I install myself for the computer voice? Shouldn't it be preinstalled as standard voice?

I'm not sure, perhaps in the Aussie version they didn't pre-install any TTS voices. I would have thought some would have been pre-installed, but you should find some on the installation CD.

With Austrailian and UK voices available, it sounds like this must be the same or similar version to the European version which has voice recognition.

I know I'm just preaching to the choir, but it still frustrates me to consider TomTom's disabling of speech recognition in anywhere but UK/Europe for the 720. I can understand diff features on diff models. But what gives on diff features on the same model for diff regions?

In this regard, TT seems evil Evil or Very Mad about their treatment of a product that is otherwise top-notch.

Sigh. Vent.

I really hope that it works for you Chin, and that you can "win this one" for the little guys (you and me) in getting Speech Recognition to work for you.

from dhn:

You MUST have North America map version 7.10 AND you MUST have firmware version for the unit 2.221 to make the feature work.

IF you have them, then you create a text file (use notepad) called support_asr.dat that contains JUST the number 1. No other spaces, carriage returns or anything.

Place this file in your ASR folder on the unit.

You'll be good to go ... this is of course assuming your unit is a TomTom 720.

Now, on the unit, Navigate to-->Address-->Spoken Word (Dialogue).

i tried the above steps and this absolutely works on the GO 720 with no noticeable drawbacks. however, in my opinion it isn't really a useful feature. you have to hit the screen a few times to get to the option, and as is the case with most voice activated devices it is a little buggy. however, if this is a must have for you, by all means go for it.

chef, You might have seen this already, but if not check out my review of the 920T Voice Recognition. I've got some tips in there on how to do it with as few taps as possible (steps 1 and 2 under the tips section).

Posttips for voice activation  Fri Jan 04, 2008 6:19 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

tim - thanks for the tips. i incorporated them, and they seem like they will make voice recognition a little more user friendly. however, i did notice 2 things:

1. when you operate the 720 from the home dock using HOME (so using your mouse to control the buttons on the computer screen, not the actual physical GPS unit) after loading the file to enable voice recognition you don't see the voice recognition icons on the 720 virtual screen on the computer. i know it is a minor issue, but it is slightly annoying. however, i do realize that this is a "hack" so i am ok with that; in fact it probably has to do with the HOME software not being written to incorporate voice recognition, but i thought i would throw it out there in case anyone performs the modification and then doesn't think it works.

more importantly,

2. for some reason after i add items to the quick preferences menu they don't stay there. i added "Call" and "FM Transmitter" but both would not be there when i used the quick preference menu at a later time. (this is using the actual physical GPS unit, not the virtual HOME unit on the computer.)

You are correct about number 1, not sure what to do about it. On number 2 there seems to be a bug that wipes out some preferences when using HOME. Perhaps that is what you are running into?

PostHOME and quick menu  Sat Jan 05, 2008 3:01 am    Reply to topic Reply with quote

yes, HOME somehow disrupts the quick menu. after using HOME the only quick menu options i see are Call Me and Switch to Day Mode.

Now this i find to be quite annoying. i really like the quick menu, but using HOME renders it useless. i have just taken everything out of it in an effort not to get angry after i spend my time adding options only to see them disappear.

Come on tomtom, lets get this fixed.

That is part of why I'm still using HOME versions < 2. Smile I like the interface of version 1 better too.

I have just been given an Australian 720 as a replacement for a 910 unit. The both spoken address buttons for voice recogonition are greyed out as shown on your picture link but the small speach icon is avaliable under the key board as you note in the second part of your post above.

I tried your quick menu trick but is does not give the "Naviagate to spoken address..." option. It just goes from "Mark location of map error" to Navigate to postcode".

Maybe its change in the latest software. Mine Version is 7.221 what version are you using?

If your in Australia here are the App Version and Map Version you need to make it work - App Version is 7.481 - Map Version v700.1491 - No other Map Versions will work at this time. There are 2 new map upgrades after this Version but will not work. Any Questions Just ask away!

Although it was not a set feature for australian models, I did had speech recognition on my 720 unit (purchased in sydney). My father also purchased a 720 about 4 months after me and his unit also had this feature enabled.

Then early July, I downloaded the 2008 australian maps and low and behold the speech recognition feature disappeared ... the button is now greyed out. (same thing happened when my father downloaded his 2008 map.

I rang tomtom support re this, only to be advised that it was only available as a trial on australian 720 models, and the feature was removed when the 2008 australian map was downloaded.

So, if your model has it and you don't want it 'taken away by tomtom' don't download the 2008 map.

Make sure to first plan a route by selecting an appropriate State and city. Further, select a computer voice and see if the VR icons appear.
