PostEntering lat/long on nuvi units.  Sat Mar 20, 2010 9:27 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

I have been reading many of the forums and have not been able to get an answer. My wife is into geocaching and has been using her cell phone to do same. She has been looking at the Garmin nuvi units for street navigation and wanted to know if they could be used to locate off-road locations by entering coordinates just as you would a street address to lead you to it? Anybody know? Jimw.

They can be used for geocaching, but since they don't have most of the features and functions that make it easier, it isn't nearly as fun (or easy).

You could have a look at the Nuvi 500 and 550. They support paperless geocaching, and also operate like any other Nuvi in the car. Since it tries to be all things for all people there are some compromises when compared to Garmin's dedicated automotive and handheld units, but it might be a good fit for your use.

I don't do geocaching myself, but I know that many people use GSAK with other Nuvi models: http://www.gsak.net/

Yhanks guys. I'll check into those units for more info. I do know she was leaning towards the 1490T due to screen size and better volume, but we'll see. Jim
