PostDashes in street address  Thu Nov 29, 2007 8:12 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

How do you enter a dash in the street address? In Fair Lawn, NJ, all the addresses have dashes in them. Lots of addresses in Queens, NY are like that too.

I went to Best Buy and tried to enter a sample address on the Tom Toms.
2-24 29th St.

1) I couldn't enter a dash.
2) I couldn't enter a space, ie. "2 24"
3) 224 29th St said address not found.

Note: I am able to do this on the Garmins quite nicely. But because of the terrible "Avoid street" functionality on the Garmin 660, I really want the TomTom 720.

Help!

This is a prime example of a canned tech support response. OK, so if it's not possible, what is the workaround? How should we enter an address with a hyphen in it? Substitute it with a space? I wish they would be more proactive with their responses and suggest some alternatives.

OK, if that is the case, Tim, then does this mean we cannot navigate to a street name that contains a hyphen? Sad

When I was playing around with it, I didn't see an option for space either.

I don't mind if "2-24 29th St" could be navigated to by using "224 29th St" but I believe when I entered that, it said "Address not found"
However, it could be that the Best Buy in NYC that I was in has their navigation systems in the basement with no satellite reception.

Can someone try this on their TomTom if they have one and let us know if this works?

I would use other mapping like Google Maps, Google Earth, S&T ... take the coordinates , punch them into TomTom. Prepare the whole bunch & find them latter in POI, Favorites or Recent Destinations ... The problem is sometimes I couldn't even find them with any of the latter. Call and ask for a cross street is the last recourse. S&T can be used offline, but the accurary is not something you can expect much from. S&T can be found for 30$ or less at this time of the year, without a GPS.

Street names that contain a hyphen are fine, but house numbers that contain a hyphen are not.

I actually navigated to a Queens location last weekend with a dash. I simply entered the full numer without dash and it mapped no problem. Surprising, as this does NOT work in Hawaii, where all but the city centre numberings have dashes!

In the example above perhaps a zero is mission. For example, 330-06 can be mapped as 33006 whatever street and there should be no issue.

The only hawaii workaround at the moment is to use cross streets, POIs or zip codes.
