PostArchive of Downloaded Map Files?  Thu Dec 20, 2007 5:48 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

I was finally able to complete a 7.10 map download for my 720. I immediately copied the map to my computer using HOME for safekeeping, in the event that I ever have to restore an old backup and then need to copy my new map back to the restored device, however, is there any advantage to keeping the files in the downloaded "map" folder as well? Are those files re-usable? Do they have any value once initially installed? If I ever need my device swapped out for any reason, would either of those map sources be usable on a different/replacement device. I believe that the map files are somehow serialized to the device when downloaded, correct?

Thanks for any insight...

Correct.

Maps liked to unit thru Home authentication. No need to store unzipped. Cant be used on another unit.

Are you referring to the copy of the map files to my PC made after the install (a), or the actual download files used for the install (b)?

(a) North_America.2GB.toc and North_America_2GB.zip

(b) the 5 files in the ...map\NorthAmerica folder

a)...my understanding is that HOME installs from the zipped files and can reinstall from them at any later date. However, b) is already authenticated, so maybe faster for a manual restore.

About 6 weeks ago, when I went through a horror show of having my NA Map 7.10 wiped out by a tomtom 'fix' and my map getting reverted to 7.05, I was able to dl the proper 7.10 map again and ultimately get it down to size to fit on my internal memory of 2 gigs.

I initially tried simply extracting the files in the zip and copying them to the unit. However, upon restarting TomTom, I got the 'no maps found' message.

I have a feeling that when installing a map using TomTom home, the file mapsettings.cfg gets updated. Simply copying files won't do it.

So, I think the initial installation of a new map requires TomTom home software to create the .cfg file. Then, reapplying the files for the SAME map from a backup would 'take'.
