Garmin 260 vs TomTom One XL-S Wed Jan 16, 2008 6:28 am
Hi guys,
I'm looking to but my first GPS and would appreciate you suggestions. They are both in the same price range with TTS so I'm leaning towards them. Appreciate our comments on this two products.
They are two products designed to compete against each other from the two biggest GPS companies. So in other words they will both be good picks and the "best pick" between them will largely come down to personal preference over any big feature discrepancy.
The biggest advantage the TomTom has is the widescreen which while it doesn't show you a ton more of the road ahead, does make the keys on the virtual keyboard bigger and easier to tap. The TomTom also has some minor advantages in having the ability to connect to an optional traffic receiver, and supports multi-destination routing.
The advantages of the Nuvi 260 are that it includes a Photo Viewer, comes with a few more POIs installed and is smaller and lighter due to the smaller screen spec.
A better comparison would be the XL-S vs the 260W.
The TT has optional traffic and multi-destination itinerary. The 260w has better battery life, truck routing option and PED mode with Hold button. The 260 may have TTFF issues if its the Bravo chip and some people have issues with the TT routing in the US (they do for Garmin too, but I see less complaints).
The 260W introduces higher prices to the comparison, so that tilts the balance to the XL-S.
Forgetting about TomToms wider screen or Nuvi photo viewer or TTs optional traffic... pound for pound, meaning better in routing with the least mistakes, which should I go for?

It seems I've seen a significant number of both quality and software issues recently in the TT1 series. Stress that it seems to be more so since the holidays, so perhaps only because of the number of units out there now, but alot compared to the Garmin you're considering. Tim would have a more accurate assessment as to whether there truly is an issue. In the meantime, I might lean more towards the Garmin, even if it does cost a bit more.
Tough to say, gatorguy. Many of the TomTom issues I've seen lately are related to HOME and the general device operation. I haven't seen an alarming number of them being returned as defective or DOA.
What's nice about the Garmin stuff is that it is simpler and more straight forward, so we naturally get fewer questions about it.

That waas the TT One LE...a discontinued model.
The XL is a different animal.
I would take an XL-S over a 260 for sure. However, depending on the price difference (if close) I would take the 260W over the XL-S. Reason, the Garmin is a better Pedestrian device. The hold button and better off-road manners give it the edge. Perhaps better POI implementation as well. See, I can be fair!
I suspect though that the 260W is much more expensive than the TT XLS
Glad I found this thread. Based on what I read here, I bought a TomTom XL-S back in December. My prior experiance before that was with a Nuvi 350. Overall I just liked the Nuvi better. The only thing about the TomTom was the advanced planning. I felt the Nuvi 350 was far more accurate. For whatever the reason, my TomTom seems to be off by 1/4 to 1/8 of mile when it comes to actual destination points. The navigation through the menus is a bit more cumbersone. I don't mind it, but my wife struggles. I think its time to ebay my XL-S and try out a 260W.
