Nuvi 260 (Firmware 2.60M) Wed Jan 30, 2008 3:42 am
Anyone know the change list of the new v2.60M GPS software firmware for the Nuvi 260? I had v2.50M, did a webupdate, saw 2.60M, however, it said "no change history was found for this update". It did upgrade my Nuvi to the new 2.60M, but curious to know what was changed.

2.6m has improve directional stability, specially in the city where signal are constantly block by highrise.
You could remove the 006B073300.GCD in RemoteSW folder if you don't like the 2.6m. But I have been testing it for 2 weeks now, and it is absolutely great!

I'm going to stick with 2.5. Stable and no issues, at least for me. I'll wait till a couple other posters give me a reason to update.
It is true in certain aspect such as changing water pump in the car.
But if you don't want the img file to change to 2.6m, you can still try the new revision by simply import the file into the folder, so it will intiate the "improvement" when you turn it on.
If you dont' like it, remove the file and your machine continue to operate like your previous version. And your machine still remain 2.5M.
I ran the web updater this morning and upgraded to 2.60. Seems to work just fine, but then it was fine before too. So no problems anyway... my 260 is running well.
Update. Nothing that I can call definitive yet, but this morning my 260 seemed to boot up even faster than normal. It has always been under 2 minutes to get that first morning lock when sitting on my desk here in the study. Today it took less than 30 seconds, from the moment it was plugged in until I got green bars. Maybe we get some of the benefit that the 2.60 update gave the 7xx series????

24 hours to get the full effect...so leave it on as much as possible till a full 24 hours pass.
I tried to update my 260 today, using the web-updater. It connects, then says it has the latest software version available. The only option is for additional updates....ie voice stuff. I tried the updater several times....same result.
Checking wrench/settings/system/about, I show the following.
Nuvi 260
Software Version 3.60
Unit ID 338122xxxx
Audio Version 1.90
GPS SW Version 2.40m
Shouldn't I be able to update to 260m?
What's the "Software Version 3.60" refer to?
I did update last week...that's how I got to where I am now. Didn't write down the previous versions. There was a software update available which I got, then it gave me options of voices. Btw, it's working fine, just thought updating would make sense, especially in light of the comments regarding faster acquisition speed.
Can/should I do this manually?....if so, where do I get the file(s)....is it just a .exe file?, what do I do in advance in case I need to "go back"? I have the unit backed up on the PC...consisting of a Garmin folder 105 Gb,1214 files,32 folders, a JPEG folder 176 Kbs, 9 files, and 0 folders, and a autorun.inf which is 77 bites. And how do I install manually?
I also noticed a box for GPS chipset type M, in the additional options section. I assume that's for the MTK chipset which I have? If I click it, it says there's no change log for this option. Am I correct in assuming it is for the MTK chip? And no change log means don't bother????
I'm new to this. Only had the unit 2 weeks, so excuse my ignorance.

Software Version 3.60 is like your Operating system. (such as Windows Xp or Windows vista)
GPS SW Version 2.40m is like your motherboard Bios.
And yes, "m" means MTK chipset.
Did you see "Type M chipset" on your voice/text menu selection while doing webupdater?
If not, there is chance Garmin might going to implement something newer for Nuvi MTK chipset, maybe quickfiexII like those in 7xx series. ( Although I already on 2.6m and it still has no quickfix II) I don't know what can quickfix do for MTK as it log on to satallite signal so fast even inside the house all the time.
And yes, you can manually initiate new 2.6M firmware as well.
If you look at your GarminDevice.XML. Scroll it down to list until you see "RemoteSW". such as...
I have 2 .GCD files. 1 is 006B068000 and the other is 006B073300. There is also a file 006B047800.bin. So I have the 2.60m GCD file. Should the other be there? Is it an old version? I'm thinking it shouldn't be there,,,,that's why I still show 2.40m. If it shouldn't be there, and I delete it....will I then be on 2.60m. And more important, assuming 73300 is as you say 2.60m.....what is the unit running with 2 of them there?
Also, re the box for the Type M chipset (yes it was in the voice text menu) I clicked it....the message says "no change log available" Does that mean there's a update available with no info, or there is no update available? If it means no info available, but there is a update....should I get it? I assume I should.

Something isn't right. If your unit is only at 2.40m then you are 2 updates behind. When I first got my 260 on Christmas it was at 2.40 like yours, and as soon as I installed the Garmin Webupdater, I immediately downloaded 2.50. Yesterday I ran the Updater again, and at the top of the list, before all the voices was the 2.60m update. I checked the box for that and it loaded the update into my unit. I then exited, properly shutdown and disconnected my unit, then powered up and it installed the new update to the GPSr. There is an online update page at the Garmin website (which never indicates that any update is available, but that isn't the Updater that is referred to here. This one requires that it be installed on your PC.
It sounds like you ran the correct updater, but I don't understand why you didn't see the 2.60 update at the top of the list.
With the device connected to the PC...I can open the Remote SW folder...in that folder are the 3 files I mentioned above. There are 2 GCD files. I think for some reason the old version is there and shouldn't be. Check yours. Do you only have the 73300 GCD file? If so, I think I need to delete the other GCD file. In checking the XML, I do show the 73300. I think I'm using 2.60m, but showing 2.40m in the system info screen. When I did the updater thing last week it did say a update was available. It seemed to download and then install the update without issue....
Can I safely remove that file with the device connected to the PC (just put it on my desktop)...then check the system/about etc to see what it says.?
And what about the Type M chipset file. I went only as far as checking the box, got the no change log message....hit next, got the I agree message. I quit at that point cus I was unsure what I was installing.
I have all 3 in the folder, same as you, one .bin and 2 .GCD, same numbers as yours.
You need to continue the process that you started. The message just says that there are no change notes with or for the update, but the update will install if you continue.
I updated the Type M chipset file. Nothing. Still 2.04m. I realized I didn't get the "firmware updated message" when I tuned the unit on after disconnecting from the computer. So I reconnected and went to the updater again....checked the box, I agree, did it's thing, exactly the same as the 1st time. This time after I disconnected from the PC, tuned the unit on....I got the firmware updated message. And I now show version 2.60m. Go figure.
When I update again....next time there's a new version 2.07m. I just connect to PC,,,run updater, and I should see 2.07m as a option. Download, disconnect...turn GPS on....get the firmware updated message. Then I go back to the updater to additional voice, etc and download the Type M chipset file and any others I may want...............right?
i have 4 files in my remote sw Folder 006B068000.gcd , 006B073300.gcd, 006B047800.bin the 4th is 006B047800.sum should that file be there or should i delete it ?
