PostHow do I do a factory reset on a 4250?  Sat Mar 01, 2008 4:11 am    Reply to topic Reply with quote

I can't figure out how to do a factory reset on my 4250.

I ended up tring to press the reset and power buttons at the same time, and held them.

This ended up getting me into the bootloader.

I wasn't sure how to navigate the menu, and tried to turn it back off, first by pressing reset, and then by pressing and holding the power button. What this did, was select "Format HDD" from the bootloader menu (pressing reset once), and then it selected that option (pressing and holding power) -- there wasn't even a conformation screen, just said if was formatting for a second or two.

Now the unit wont even boot. When you turn it on, you get the blue magellan screen, and then the bar, at the botton, that fills up -- when the bar is full, it just sits there like that, and never boots.

How do I get this back to factory defaults?

There really isn't an "erase to factory defaults". You just (unfortunately) erased the entire drive. I really don't know how you would proceed from there.

Darn. I was starting to think that was the case, since I couldn't find ANYTHING in the manual or online (even google searching) about doing a factory reset on it.

Well, here's the deal -- I bought this thing a week ago at Costco -- I wasn't really happy with it, (very slow -- GREAT POI, and pretty map, other than that it sucked IMO) so I bought a TomTom 920. And was planning on returning the 4250 or selling it on ebay.

Since I just accidentally erased the OS trying to perform a factory reset (which apparently isn't possible) -- I was thinking, that it might actually work to my advantage, trying to return it, cause I could just say "It's defective, and I just want to return it, because I have lost faith in the brand"

But I have noticed that in the 4250 box it says basically "Call Magellan if you have problems.... Do not to return to the place of purchase."

So because of that -- I'm kinda thinking, the fact it doesnt work, might work against me if I try to return it. Because they might say- if it's not working you have to call Manufacturer.

So what does everyone think -- should I try to return it like it is --- or do you think I should try to call Magellan Support and fix it first*, and then try to return it?

*(I think it is pretty easily fixable -- I can still get into the bootloader menu, and there is an option for "update OS" -- but it says "no card detected" -- so it looks like you have to get the files and put them on an SD card to reinstall the OS --- I just dont know where/how to get the files)

It says that in the box of most all of the major GPS brands.

I had gotten that impression, since the TT920T also said that on the box.

I'm still curious though....

Has anyone had some experience with returning a GPS? (even better if you have had experience trying to return one to Costco)

*And just tell them that its defective, but that I wouldn't want it even if it did work.

Just try it Mikey!

Stick it in the box, grab your receipt and go to Costco.

I think you are missing my point. The unit currently does not boot. What I am trying to a "feel for" here is whether or not I should call Magellan first to fix it, or take it back as is? (It already is all nicely packed back in the box.)

Although there is no Costco where I live, I thought it was a policy of costco that they will take returns no questions asked for up to three months if you are a member.

They took it back, no questions asked, and gave me a cash refund.

Blow the left hand side of the screen on the bottom is a hole. Use a paper clip and puch it into the hole and hold. Lightly hold. This will reset the 4250 to factory defaults.

With the unit off do the following.
Looking at the screen their is a small hole on the bottom of the unit left hand side. Use a paper clip and push into hole and hold for a few seconds. This will reset the unit to factory defaults.
