Keep left, keep left, exit on right Fri Mar 14, 2008 8:55 pm
This morning while driving down the three lane I-90, my Garmin 660 tells me repeatedly to "keep left" about 3 miles before my intended exit. I naturally changed to the leftmost lane thinking the exit might be on the left. To my chagrin, as I'm going 80mph on the left lane, the Garmin's next instruction was "Exit XX on the right" (I don't remember the exact distance, but it was VERY last minute). WTF? I then had to hurriedly cross two lanes to the rightmost lane in less than 20 seconds to get to my exit.
Has anyone else experienced this? Seems kind of dangerous. I'm new to GPSes, so not sure if I'm just misinterpreting what "keep left" means. What does "keep left" mean in this case? Certainly not the leftmost lane. Maybe it just means "don't exit off the right yet," as I noticed the "keep left" went off when there was another right exit before mine.
After doing a Google search and simulating my route again it seems when Garmin says "keep left" or "keep right", it's usually when the highway branches into two. So it doesn't mean to change to the leftmost lane, but simply stay on the left or right side of the branching. Sometimes though, as in my case, the branching is not obvious (would appear to be just a regular exit), so a "keep left" instruction is very confusing when you are actually just required to simply following the road.

Do you have the unit mounted up at eye level? If so, you should be able to tell from the displayed map with a quick look which side the exit is once you get close enough. The friction mount is a great choice if you don't want to affix the windshield mount.
Also, for safety- you don't HAVE TO do what it tells you! If you are on the far left and your exit is on the right and very soon, there is no need to cut over in a hurry, thinking only about your exit. Drive first, navigate second- and your GPS is not the boss of you.
One of the best things about having a GPS navigation system is that if you miss your exit, it can easily and gently (even if it sounds a little irritated...) recalculate and get you back on on track to your destination.
