Go930 Active Lane Guidance Vs Go920 Sat Mar 15, 2008 7:45 pm
Hi All;
I've been researching for about 4 months now and I'm running out of patience. I was planning on getting a 920 as I need Europe maps. Now I need to consider a 930. The thing I like most about the 930 is the Active Lane Guidance. It would have been a big help on my last trip. I've read the discussions about the possibility of the x20's getting this update down the road (no pun intended ) so that would be good.
The question I have for all you current x20 users (especially the 920) is this. When I look at the screen shots of the new 930 lane guidance static picture, where you see the 3 lanes with the right lane showing the arrow to turn and the realistic road sign, I notice that in the bottom left corner of the screen it shows two light blue straight arrows, a dotted line and then a white, right turning, arrow with the distance to turn of 800 metres. Does the current 920 firmware show this also or do you only get the right turning arrow along with the distance?
As I say, I don't know how much longer I can hold off. If I can get at least the three arrows on the bottom of a 920 so that I can see from there which lane I should be in, I think I'll be OK with that. Is it worth waiting for the 930? Any and all opinions or suggestions are much appreciated.
What the 920 will show, when known, and when applicable is generally which "side" of the lanes you need to be in. For example if three lanes continue straight, and two lanes go right (for a total of five lanes) the 920 will show one lane going straight and a second lane (in white showing the "lane" you want) going to the right. So think of it las lane guidance, but showing you basically a maximum of two lanes at a time.
I'm also fairly certain that the 930's will only show 3 lanes even if there are 4 or 5 actual lanes, correct. Aren't the three lanes a static display, with only the road sign and arrows changing?
The reason I ask is that one of the 'Experts" at another site implied the lane view was always the same, which seemed, if true, to not be a lot of help in many cases. Glad to see you were able to post a screen shot to clarify.
It certainly is the same from the perspective that there is the same green grass and horizon. But the number of lanes does appear to change. In the screenshot above two go left and one goes right with the driver needing to take the third lane. In this video three go left and two go right with the driver needing to take the fourth lane.
They also mention that the arrow pointing to the correct lane blinks, so it sounds like they do display the amount of lanes.

I agree Tim. My understanding was that they have a stock set of static images. If you consider that there can only be a maximum of five or six lanes, if you had a picture for all the different combinations it would only amount to maybe a hundred images. They then only need to display the one that fits the situation along with the road sign (which they sort of already do although not as realistically).
I guess the answer to my original question asking if the multiple lanes will be displayed on the 920 is no. Barring a firmware update it looks like the only way I can be sure to get it is to wait for the 930's to come out. Thanks very much for the help. The screen shot really helped. It looks like this is even more useful to me than I originally thought so I'll probably hold off a little longer.
