Solution for broken VR and firmware 7.40 on 720's Wed Mar 19, 2008 1:08 pm
I suggested this to a user in another forum and he reports that it seems to work.
Remove the mapsettings.cfg file from the map folder on your unit AFTER the installation of the new firmware and replace it with the mapsettings.cfg file from a backup PRIOR to the download of the new firmware.

Nope! Tried that and it doesn't work. Any other suggestions?
after placing the mapsettings.cfg from the old version, VR is back!
I even did it twice to make sure that was really it..
as soon i place back the mapsettings.cfg of version 7.48, icons get back grayed.
placing 7.221 restores them.
VR new caption icon even works.
I don't know what to tell you. It worked for him. Simply replaced the mapsettings.cfg from 7.480 with the same file from the 7.221 backup. He didn't even need a pin reset on his 720.
Sounds like a different symptom that what I see. The VR menu options are there, and the new lips icon appears and everything... it just doesn't seem to turn the mic on.
Did you revert to the mapsettings.cfg file of the earlier 7.221? He also reported to me that he did NOT have a support_asr.dat file in the ASR folder and it STILL worked!
Perhaps, if you put that file in as a hack to get the 720 to have VR with the 7.221, then remove it and see if VR now works. (The European 720's do NOT have the .dat file as I understand it and they have always had VR).

That sounds like the behavior I'd expect from a non-North American 720. I've tried replacing it with previous as well as removing and letting it rebuild.
And after: 1) replacing with the 7.221 mapsettings.cfg AND removing the support_asr.dat file, you still don't get VR to work???
btw, in another forum (you accuse me of hanging out too much in ), someone with the new build reported he was no longer seeing street names on the map that ran off on the vertical, rather than the horizontal (such as when driving on a diagonal stretch).
He reported that, after over an hour with TTSupport, they acknowledged 'bugs' in this firmware update and that there should be another 'early next week'

Is this update still available? I have held off connecting my 920 to my mac after reading these posts. Also, besides VR is anything else negatively impacted?

Just talked to TT support.
Because when I Navigate to Address Cross street or intersection City Street Cross street, it hangs at the message of "One moment please.....".
Also Slow on Navigate to Address Street and House number (there is a pause of about 3 seconds before showing the Cities) choose a city (takes another 3 seconds before showing the Streets). Even click on Back, you have to wait for about 3 seconds to take you back to the last screen.
Tried Clear flash and reset, same thing.
He said that we'll be getting a new application within 7 business days.
I also asked him why the VR was removed from the NA 720 because he said that the memory for the NA 720 isn't enought for different variation of English computer voices/dialects/etc. when compairing it to the European version.

Can someone try this to see if the VR works for the 720 with US and Europe map.
1. Change your Home(residence) in your 720 to somewhere in Europe.
2. Change your default map to Europe (if you have NA and Europe in your SD card).
3. Change your computer voice to English UK.
4. Reset and turn it on without the device knowing where you are in the world.
I have a feeling that when two of these are true, it will not shut-down VR.
Ok so i was looking around and here is the info i came up with.
Version 7.480
Map NA 2GB 7.05
This is NOT newest map is it? So, it will not work with this map?
I tried to do Map Promise thing from TT Home and it said it has no updates but yet it seems there IS a newer version. What is up with that?
Ohh yeah 1 more thing. When i pop my SD card with European maps and switch to that, voice feature magically works great. WTF!?!
