I never trust any CS rep when they announce an upcoming firmware update. They are rarely correct. I think most of the time they just give people a random date to get them off the phone.

I just wrote to customer support letting them know that they are currntly falsely advertising the TOM TOM 920 with voice input anf that it needs to be corrected immediately or I will be returning their device and trying another device.

Actually, for what it's worth, the Thursday date was provided to me in a private message from a TT Employee.

I love Costco's return policy!!!
I suspect that they will fix it. I did not do this "bad" firmware update and will not do the "fix" until a few weeks and good comments pass. I suspect that per the other threads, they are trying to find a way to distinguish the 920's from the 720's in order to kill voice recognition (VR) on the 720's. That's probably taking time and maybe, finally, actual beta testing. Although how they convince 720 users to test losing VR is anyone's guess.
I'm still no a very happy TT camper due to their map update policies for the 920. Costco may see mine back, too!!!
I received an email from TomTom today that said version 7.481 would be released April 1st.
I have a new 920 (my first GPS and after much research and debate -thanks to all the posters on this site. It was a tough call between Garmin and TomTom) that I bought from Dell when they had it on sale for $360. When I was upgrading the map to the newest version it also loaded the now dreaded 7.48 update. I was told by TomTom that the new version would correct the voice recognition issues from the previous update.

By saying that the new FW will correct the VR problem are they saying that it will be enabled or are they saying that they make sure that the North American units will never be able to use it?
Keep in mind that my unit is a 920 which is suppose to have VR. My email to them was instructing them that the update has disabled my VR. This was their exact reply.
"This is caused by a bug in application 7.480, it disables speech recognition and some other minor things. Application version 7.481 will be released tomorrow (April 1) to fix these issues.
If you have any further questions or comments, please email or call us at 866-486-6866 Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM until 7:00 PM EST. Thanks again for writing. At TomTom we believe in showing you the way the easy way.
The firmware issue impacted hacked 720s as well as 920s that legitimately have VR. The 920 is still advertised as having VR on the TomTom USA website. Therefore it is unimaginable to think that they are going to disable VR for the 920 here.
Since the firmware issue unintentionally broke VR on the 920, I can only expect that a future firmware update will fix it on the 920.
As to if a future firmware update will make it so that the hack works again on the 720, I'd suspect that it will. I've had some general conversations with TomTom people about software hacks as it pertains to enabling Itinerary Planning on the ONE 3rd Edition and VR on the 720.
Their stance has basically been that they obviously cannot support people making those customizations. However they also said they were not likely to go out of their way to stop people from making those changes through future firmware updates. They said that a routine change might break those hacks, but that they were not going to go out of their way to seek out devices that were hacked and break the functionality.
Obviously they are free to change their mind and there can be other factors at play such as licensing issues. Also given the nature of the topic this isn't exactly a policy that is written in stone and represents just a couple of casual conversations I've had with them.
Going back to the licensing issues... TomTom has licensed voice recognition software from Nuance which is what powers the feature. It wouldn't be unreasonable for them to find out that people are hacking their 720 and getting the feature when TomTom hasn't paid Nuance for a license for that feature on that particular device. They could get upset and start to put pressure on TomTom to disable the hack.
But if I had to guess I'd say that when the feature is fixed on the 920, enabling it on the 720 again is likely.

Thanks Tim for the info....
As a owner of a 720, I'll just let some others users dl, install, and verify VR works.
Better safe than sorry.
As stated on another thread, the new firmware has been posted and it works perfectly. The route recalculation feature works better now than with 7.221 and voice recognition has been restored. Now I still have the hack with "1" in the file and it works. I don't know if it works without it.

The VR operation appears smoother now and you can talk to it faster... there is less lag waiting for it to start listening to you.
Is the itinerary function on HOME now restored as well?
(Operate my device) It is not restored on Home 2.2.2.28 for Macintosh PPC G5 computers. (don't know about Intel Macs). they are supposed to update 2.2.2.28 to work on all Macs but who knows when.

No go on Operate My Go for intel macs too. Mine did work with 7.221 but hasn't since the new updates.
