People, I received a message in a TomTom forum in Europe. I do not know the user; I strongly suspect he is an emplyee of TomTom. What is VERY disturbing about the message contents is:

---------
The 720 is NOT suppose to have ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) working in north america. There was a mistake at the factory which included the files and that is why some 720's in NA comes with this enabled.

and this:

Eventually the current 720's that has ASR enabled will be disabled in north america!

Please don't forward/post this pm anywhere else Smile
-----------
Well, so much for his last line request. Twisted Evil

I do NOT know anything more.

Interesting comment ...

I say that because it was an Aussie poster way back in October, if I remember correctly, who pointed out the Aussie version of the TT 720's had the apparent icons for VR but not the functionality as the European 720's did. At that time it was understood that the NA 720 units never were designed for VR but, one thing led to another, and it was discovered a file 'hack' could get the NA 720's to have VR functioning. At that time, the Aussie units seemed not to work with the file hack.

Now, from your comment, it seems the Aussie units have that functionality as well. Strange stuff, mate.

No, you dont....See Tim's 920 review and it will explain how to d it all handsfree. It requires the use of dialog and setting the unit to revert to the nav screen after 10 secs.

See the section Voice Prompt Tips in that link. One you start the voice recognition process you can do the whole thing hands free.

What some are reporting after the upgrade to 7.480 is that the lips become greyed out in the street number screen after working ok for city and street. That may be the issue here.

Also, one poster found that VR failed in the street number screen for his NA 7.15 map but worked all the way through with his NA 7.10 map (which he had stored on a sd). This was all after an upgrade to .480 and a downgrade to .221

Strange, huh?
