Have my iPAQ310 for three days and loving it... :) Fri Apr 04, 2008 9:47 pm
I had a Tomtom and liked its user interface and customizability. Used a Magellan borrowed from friend for a couple weeks and liked its routing. But the iPAQ, it's really different.
With all the information I got on this site, I have been a very happy owner of an iPAQ for three days and loving it. One of the key decision factor was Infama's answer to one of my earlier post. He said I would be bewitched once I saw an HP. Him being a long time TomTom user/lover, I think it takes a lot for him to say so. After getting my unit, I think I understand what he meant.
It certain has a lot of things that can be improved. It also hung on me a couple times (not during navigation though). But the feature is so rich and the hardware is nice. The route selections I experienced so far all make sense. There is a section in my neighborhood that for some reason TomTom and Magellan would always suggest a weird route around. HP actually got it right.
Screen is absolutely beautiful but can be a little brighter. I found it a little hard to read in broad day light in California. But that might be the angle of the mount and the mount is not that convenient to adjust. Voice direction can use some improvement too. I updated the software but the volume is still low and hard to comprehend too at times. 3D rendering is definitely a "Wow". Watching the buildings showing up is impressive.
Strangest thing is when I first connected to my PC to run the content manager and update, my antivirus software kicked in and removed a whole bunch of files, claiming they are virus. I sat on line on the HP "active chat" for an hour and the guy just said this was not possible. In the process I found some article on HP forums saying people experienced the same thing and it didn't really hurt.
So, 3rd day now. There are things I like and hope can be improved. But overall, I love it. For the feature and the hardware, the $200 deals is impossible to beat.
By the way, did I mention that it even connected to my cheap Motorola bluetooth phone that is not listed on the compatibility list for most of the other models with no problems.
