Map updates and cost (Garmin v. TomTom) Sat Apr 12, 2008 7:51 pm
I'm debating between a TomTom One (either 3rd or XL) and a Garmin (either 250 or 250W) and have some questions regarding maps:
1) As far as I know, TomTom has a policy to make sure you can update your maps to the most current ones as no additional charge within 30 days from purchase. Does Garmin also offer this? If not, how do you make sure you have the most current maps before buying the unit?
2) What does it (approximately) cost to update the maps packs (North America) - for both Garmin and TomTom? Is Garmin way more expensive than TomTom? How often are they released?
1) Garmin no longer has a stated policy-- they used to. They handle it on a case by case basis now. You don't know for certain which map version comes on a Garmin unless the store makes some sort of claim themselves (which is rare).
2) TomTom typically charges $99, although sometimes they are on sale for much less. TomTom has been releasing map updates once per quarter. You can download them. Garmin's map updates are typically $79, and are offered annually, on DVD.
Here in Australia if you brought a Garmin GPS after a set date eg; July you could be eligible for a free update. These dates can vary but could be up to 6 prior of new release , even though the Stores tell you you'll save with the update your getting it for free anyway
