2009 map update Thu Apr 17, 2008 12:52 am
Garmin has the part number and is ready to ship.
I registered my Nuvi 360 on March 1, 2008. First Guy I talked to said map update not available for a week or two. Second guy I talked to said I don't qualify for a free update. Offered to sell it to me at half price, about $44.00 including shipping. Now I'm thinking I should return it and buy another unit.
I'd call again. It been generally reported that units purchased after March 1st would receive the update free. I'd ask for a supervisor if you get the same answer again.

Called again, and the guy said that is the way it is. Told him I would just return it, then I asked for a supe and he came back with "I will be sending you a free update"
It's already available from some webvendors (ie, Amazon). Garmin will have it on their site within another week. Street price for the upgrade is about $56 (how much in Euros?)
I just orderd Nuvi 360 today Apr 18, 08 on Amazon. Would you think I will get the 2009 version? if not, will they be pleased to give me the free upgrade? Thanks

So, my wife and I both have Nuvi's. I get that I'll have to pay twice for the maps (wouldn't want to be the reason Garmin goes out of business) but...does that mean :
1. I buy the CN CD twice?
2. I buy it once and buy two unlock codes?
If I have to buy the CD twice, and have one laptop I use to apply updates from, do I have to install the CD, update one Nuvi, uninstall the software, re-install from the other CD, and then update the 2nd Nuvi?
I've been trying to put this together based on fragmented bits of info from various sources. Not quite sure how this works.
I called yesterday about the new maps, and they also stated that the maps will be coming out at the end of the month. I guess I should have asked for a supervisor. Has anyone else been able to get Garmin to send them the disk?
settings>map>about. I don't hink you'll have the new 2009 maps on it, but if you just purchased and have registered with Garmin, you will receive it free of charge.
Sign into your account at garmin (mygarmin) then under "my Registered Products" be sure the nuvi is hilighted, then map updates. Right now it will still show none available. Once it's offered by Garmin, if you are entitled to a free update, it will show in your account. If not, and you still believe you should get it at no charge, THEN call customer service. Should see update at Garmin within a week or so.

Depends on who you talk to at Garmin. Some of their own people say it wont be available for a couple weeks. Others say it is available and it is listed at some vendors. Garmin told me mine would ship in a week to 10 days and then sent it UPS for Next day delivery.

I am considering buying a Garmin Nuvi 200w GPS unit. I have emailed Garmin about this, but have not received a reply which addresses my question. With the new maps coming out, when can I expect to see units available with them preloaded at major retailers such as Circuit City or Wal-mart? Has anyone had any experience with this and past updates? Thanks for any help.
Several of you have only been around these forums for a few months, but people who have been members longer will likely remember this thread which contained an email supposedly from Garmin's VP of Worldwide Sales regarding their change in map update policy.
The thread is long, but it is worth a skim if you want to see the chronology of how their map update policy went from a written policy of providing updates, to a (nearly) written policy of no free updates for anyone, to something now that isn't cut and dry... often people get it.. if they push for a supervisor, etc.
Although not definitive by any means, for those who have installed the 2009 update, when you boot, if you watch quickly one of the last copyright notices in the small text at the bottom after 'loading maps...' will typically say something like '2007 (c) NAVTEQ'. What does yours say? (Again, for those who have updated.)
I got this on one of the other forums, POI Factory

Below is an answer directly from an email I received from Garmin regarding my question...
Please note that map updates are NOT free of charge, maps are $69.99 plus tax and shipping where applicable, If your unit was purchased and registered after March 1st 2008, and you have City Navigator North America V8 or City Navigator North America NT 2008 installed on your unit, you are entitled to one free map update for 2009. If your unit already has City Navigator North America NT 2009 preloaded to it and your registered you are NOT eligible for a free map update for 2009. If your unit was purchased and registered prior to March 1st 2008 with older mapping preloaded to it you are not eligible for a free map update, you must purchase the map update if you choose to update your Garmin product. **********
************For customers that own the Streetpilot C330 units wanting to update there units with the new 2009 map update, you will be able to update your unit, however, your unit is very limited to the amount of memory that it contains, therefore when you order a map update you will be given the following options to update your unit: Update just the LOWER 48 STATES, OR JUST THE CANADIAN PROVINCES with the bordering US STATES, OR JUST A WEST QUADRANT OF THE MAP, OR JUST AN EAST QUADRANT OF THE MAP UPDATE, you will not be able to update all of the mapping on this unit because of its limited internal memory. ******************
*********Canadian Customers are encouraged to order these map updates thru a local dealer, if ordered thru MyGarmin the updates will be charged applicable duties, taxes and or fees
Pretty much what I posted a few weeks ago. Now we'll see if Garmin actually follows thru without making eligible owners jump thru hoops like some companies.
No "hoops" for me. They gave me a order number and said it would be shipping in 7-10 business days. I can check in on my order whenever by calling them with the number.
Seems like the same deal with the mapsource dvd they sent me. Give an order number, predict ship date, then it arrives much earlier than they said.
The customer service rep wrote in bold letters that there would be NO CHARGE for the newest map and that a copy was being sent my way.
I don't think they've "officially" released them yet (tho I and several others have them). Should show up under MyGarmin > "your device" (if only one, doesn't matter) > map updates .

kudos to garmin again!
How did you do this? Did you talk to a rep or did you exchange emails? I talked to a rep yesterday and he said that they didn't have any new maps to send out yet.
If you bought your Garmin before March 1st this year, you may as well order the update from Amazon, as you don't qualify for a free copy. If purchased after March 1st, and you've registered it with Garmin, you do qualify for an update and shouldn't be any need to call customer service. When Garmin makes it "official", checking for map updates at MyGarmin should show your eligibilty and instructions for receiving it on DVD. This is my understanding, and I'm pretty confident in it. Of course my understanding is not official.
This is may story I bought a Nuvi 760 April 16-08. I call them between e-mail and they told me it will be for free when they get the 2009 map because the one that are out are from private dealers.
Thank you for the email. The update is being sold through dealers at $70.00 however if you try to order the update from our website this update is not available at this time. We are in the process in getting the update in stock. The link below will allow you to order this update. I do not know at this time if your update will be free or not since we are not selling this update at this time. Please note you will receive a email from us when Garmin has this update in stock and available to be shipped. Thanks again for the email and have a great week.

Joonior, trust me on this one. The map is not even available from the Garmin website yet and you're in a panic already. You will get the update at no charge.
I purchased my Nuvi 360 from Amazon on Aprl 18 and still be waiting to receive it. However, I contacted Garmin customer service ahead if I'm qualified for getting the 2009 map update. The representative (named Paul Sw.) replied me that I will be qualified for free update of 2009 map if it is not included in my unit.
He also gave me very detailed instructions how to get the map ( as some threads above mine) and update it, and advised me that I should wait until Apr 30 to register my Nuvi, since that's the first day available for 2009 map online update. After registering, they will send me the map DVD automatically to my registered Garmin account's mailing address, for free. Very nice !!
I'm very impressive about Garmin customer service. This is my first Garmin product and experience with Garmin customer service. I received the first email within only a day, and another email just one day later! Can not require more. Now, just wait for the Nuvi 360 !
