D-Way, Garmins 60-day latest map policy is very generous compared to many manufacturers. Good to see that even tho you didn't qualify for free, you still got half-price.
Also note that Garmin isn't offering the update on all products. Purchase a Nuvi 350 today, for example, and you will not be offered the map update as Garmin considers the Nuvi 350 "end of life". I've had quite a few people email me about this.
There may be an issue with the 600's as well. I've seen posts from owners that received the update, but at least one post echoing your comment about the 300's. Are they no longer manufacturing the 300's, remaining pipeline stock only perhaps?

Yea, I told them I wasn't expecting them to give it to me for free but that some type of discount would be greatly appreciated. I went that trying to provide good customer service route with them. I was happy with the price they gave me.
So I decided to by the disc today instead of downloading it. Bought it at Best Buy. Unfortunately, once I got home I realized I don't have a DVD drive. Only a CD burner drive. Nice.
You can buy a no-frills internal DVD drive for less than $25 these days, and a no-frills DVD burner for less than $50, but you have to know your way around the computer insides to install it yourself. If that's not an option, can you borrow or rent a USB external DVD drive?
So I went to go download the updated map and got this, anyone else?

I think I figured this out... it doesn't appear to be compatible with Safari on Macs. As soon as I tried on my PC it worked fine. Going back to my Mac, no go.
I was told on the phone that I was not eligible for a free update for my 250W purchased in January 2008 but when I logged into my Garmin account it said I was. I ordered the DVD, we will see if I get it. Dan

I just registered my 360 that I bought on 3/4/08 and I'm eligable for the update.
Is the download the exact same thing that is on the DVD? Is there any advantage to spending the $10 on the DVD at all? I have a great internet connection, so downloading it would be no problem, I just don't want to miss out on anything.
Hi
I just download the map update this AM for my n260w.
Everything worked fine, it did a software update first, then the map update.
The directions for the download and software updates are very easy to follow, it just takes some time, so don't be in a hurry to go anywhere
I did copy the downloaded files and update key to a dvd. Really don't know if I ever will need them again, but I'm treating them like a back-up file just in case.
I bought 2 Nuvi 660's on 4-14-2008. Today I emailed Garmin through their website to ask about a free map update. Unfortunately it seems they are having issues with their email. I keep getting an exception error when trying to read their response. I did register my both products on there but the only option they are showing for a map update is the paying option. I have read you guys are getting the free upgrade without emailing them?
I just want to be sure that they are offering a free map upgrade to the 2009 version. As of yet nothing has changed on their site as far as offering it for free.
I'd call their support department by phone. Only the newer devices that were recently registered are automatically eligible for the free map update.
Thanks Tim,
I actually just registered them a couple days ago, and it was less than 2 weeks that the new maps came out after buying them. I will call them though as their email is still messed up.
Right, but since your 600 series device is a generation old, it doesn't automatically qualify. Same situation with the 300 series.
I just received an email from Garmin stating "This particular unit is not a unit that will be manufactured with the 2009 map version that was recently released as an update" . They said I'd have to pay for the update for both units.
I thought I did read in here that people with that model # did in fact get a free update?
2009 map updates for 360 and 660 Mon May 05, 2008 7:43 pm
For what it is worth.
Just spoke with garmin customer service regarding 2009 map Updates.
Told them I was considering purchase of either 360 or 660 unit and wanted to know whether i was eligible for free map update.
I was told 360 was never a problem, yes...eligible. I assume all 300 series the same but I don't know.
I was also told that 660 had not been eligible...until today 5/5/2008. Apparently many complaints have resulted in a change of policy and 660's now eligible ( again...not sure about entire 600 series line )
Ordered 360 from Amazon...will arrive tomorrow...and I will let you know.
We have six pages of people trying to aquire the 2009 maps. I would like some comments on what everyone thinks of the new maps. I take the same route to work daily. After the new maps, my 260 tells me to exit at least two miles sooner than the correct exit as the original maps indicated. It also told me to make a U turn when my destination was ahead of me, and in sight! I'm glad it was free, but I'm not sure if this is the cost.

Hi all,
Just picked up the 760 tonight from Best Buy.
I went to the Garmin site, created a "my garmin" account, and as soon as I entered the serial number, it informed me right away I was eligible for a free 2009 map upgrade.
So it's downloading as we speak.
No fuss, no muss.
map Update for 360 worked fine Tue May 06, 2008 11:37 pm
As I posted last night, I had been told that 2009 Free Map Updates were being offered on the nuvi 360 and 660 per my discussion with the Garmin Support person. ( assume, but I am not sure that other models in the 300 and 600 line also qualify)
Ordered 360 from Amazon yesterday for $ 245 +/- and received today.
( Amazon has always been great for me )
Registered unit and checked for eligibility and YES...free map update downloading as we speak.
Remember, this is only for units purchased after a certain date...I think March 1st.
It may actually be for units first activated and acquired signal after march 1st.
Interesting.... someone emailed me today to say they had returned a 360 they received yesterday because the online site said no and tech support also told them no re: free update to 2009.
Tim, this was a change of heart as of yesterday (the 5th). Garmin is apparently giving the free update to the 300 and 600 series as long as they qualify as of March 1st, same as the others. I understood it applied to all model version , 350, 360, etc., but I'm just going by posts and reports

North America NT 2009 - free map update! Wed May 07, 2008 7:28 am
My experience is the same (as described in Kingston_Cabbie's message).
I logged in, gave Garmin my serial number (it's a 650), and they allowed me to download the new maps and provided me with the product activation code.
The download is .exe file about 2GB, and took me over an hour to download. Their download manager uses Java and multiple connections, because it was coming fairly fast at 600 KB/s.
After connecting your Garmin to the computer, run the map file (make sure your firewall allows it to "go out"), type in unlock code when requested, then go watch a movie (it took about 2 hours to unpack file and update maps).
After checking for successful completion, check map details on your GPS it should say "NT 2009".
Happy updating, and thanks to Garmin there will be a lot of loyal customers in the making.

Well, it was yesterday when they called, but I'll tell them to call again and see what happens.

One user posted a review of the 2009 maps. Though it is difficult to determine how much improvement there might be in your area as not all areas get updated equally.

2009 Map Update Wed May 07, 2008 5:12 pm
Hello,
First, let me thank you guys for the information you share in this forum. Just want to share my experience. I purchased my Nuvi 660 on 4/3/08 not really aware of the Map Update being available soon after purchase. Then I've been reading in this forum what some of you did to get your free Map Update so I called Garmin last week to find out if I qualify for a free update. The lady I spoke with checked a list of qualified units and mine wasn't included and she won't even give me a discount. So I decided to just order it and actually received the DVD yesterday and installed it in my Nuvi.
Today I read in this forum that Garmin changed that and decided to give free updates! So I called just about a half-hour ago and said that I was calling to complain regarding this and guess what! They are gonna credit me for my purchase! Yes!

directions for downloading the new maps Wed May 07, 2008 10:13 pm
I am eligible to get a free 2009 map update to my Nuvi 260w.
I talked to a Garmin rep and he said to just attach the USB cord to the PC and the GPS, then go to the Garmin website to download the maps but really didn't say how. Can some one explain the step by step method to do this?
He also said it might take up to 4 hours to download. I have a cable connection to the internet but won't the 260w turn itself off automatically after 10 minutes?
Thanks for any info youj can provide.

Tim, the rep said if I connected the GPS to the PC via the USB cable, the download would go right on to the GPS. Is this the best way to proceed? If I download to my computer how do I get the download into the 260w? You guessed it I'm not so trusting of my ability nor my computer to perform like it should.

Garmin 370-garbled spanish and outdated Spain map Thu May 08, 2008 5:34 pm
Bought a Nuvi 370 April, 2008 and spent 3 weeks in Spain. The verbal information on street names was almost incomprehensible. This person had never encountered a spanish word, Most of the major highways between cities were not on the Garmin map and I turned off the Garmin after being told to get onto a small roads nearby.
Friends in another car had the Tom Tom which worked perfectly.
I called Garmin today, 5/8/08, who advised me to buy the European update which should come out at some indeterminate future date for an unknown amount. My Nuvi is one month old and these recommendations are unacceptable. My recommendation is buying a Tom Tom. Their european system is up-to-date and their customer support can't be worse than Garmin's
Tried to get 2009 map nuvi 660 Fri May 09, 2008 1:31 pm
This is the response I got back from Garmin when I asked for the 2009 update for my Nuvi 660 that is only 4 weeks old.
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to help you with this.
Garmin does not offer free map updates as a standard policy.
Garmin does not plan to manufacture the nuvi 660 model with the 2009
maps.
Unfortunately, if a device is not
going to be manufactured with the new map, it will not be eligible for a
free map update.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this might cause.

It should be free for any and all units which are under warranty, which is one year.
Garmin, for whatever reason, does not have a written map update policy. There IS a written warranty which is included with every unit, and is also on their web site.
That warranty covers "defects in materials or workmanship for one year from the date of purchase." There is NO exclusion in the warranty for map data.
It should be obvious that every map has defects. Garmin admits as much in the printed disclaimer shipped with every unit ("Virtually all data sources contain some inaccurate or incomplete data.")
Unless and until they change the warranty to exclude map data, Garmin, as expressed by their own explicit warranty, is legally and ethically bound to provide updates during the warranty period.
Thanks, they did change there minds. I went to the site last night and signed into my account and a free upgrade was waiting to be downloaded. The download (2 GB) and installation process does take some time, but I think Garmin did the right thing by allowing people with new products the chance to update the map software. Thanks again fo the info!

The Disk Option is Rather Quick... Mon May 12, 2008 2:15 pm
I ordered my free (disk) update on May 2, and although the Garmin site stated that the expected wait was four to six weeks, I had it in my hands a week later, on May 9. The total time for the update, including Map Source, was about forty minutes.
Does anyone know why my 760 qualifies for the 2009 maps and my fathers 750 does not? Although they were purchased about 1 month apart, with the 760 being the earlier purchase, they were both registered on the same day. Before trying to call Garmin, any idea why this might be?
