920 "Latest map guarantee"- is this a joke? Sat Apr 26, 2008 5:36 pm
OK new 920 owner, arrived Thursday. Charged it, then using HOME 2.3 I did all the updates (software to 7.481, downloaded some other things like the new "Susan" computer voice, quick GPS fix etc).
Then I tried to update the maps.
WTH do I have to do? My map version is 710, and I know from reading here and on other forums that 715 is available. HOME tells me I already have the latest map when I hit the "Use Latest Map Guarantee", yet I can go to the "Add maps" section and add the 715 map to my shopping cart (for only $99) even though it won't let me download it because I don't have enough memory on the 920.
Am I doing something wrong? It seems pretty clear-cut, I follow all the instructions (such as they are) and I know a new map is available, but for some reason I cannot get it.
Do I really have to phone CS to get something that appears to be accessible using HOME 2.3? Until you try to get it through HOME of course.
Yes, either call or use email support. They will need a scan or photo of your map guarantee and original receipt. They will just offer NA map update, if you push hard enough they may give you the Europe maps as well. I managed it.
Once TomTom support approve your request you will see the Maps in Home
Am I wrong in thinking there is something wrong with this setup? Why even have a button in HOME that says "Use latest map guarantee"? Why do they make a big deal about not needing to enter the guarantee code anymore in HOME 2.3?
Nowhere do you get a message saying that you actually need to phone in to get this upgrade. Nothing on the paperwork in the box, nothing anywhere (and my paperwork is for a 720 anyway).
So if I was computer illiterate and did not bother to immerse myself in the online users forums (and probably a number of purchasers don't do this) I would have seen the message in HOME that says I already had the latest version and that would have been the end of it.
I suspect they prefer not to give away the maps if they can avoid it. The vast majority of new owners would just say, "Oh good, I've got the latest maps already" and leave it at that. If you call, you'll likely get them. But apparently they aren't going to tell you that. After 30 days, they're in the clear.
I had the same issue,, called customer service and set up a tomtom account. I scanned my receipt in pdf format, uploaded it to tomtom, within one hour they had my update 715 in my tt home.

Did you have to delete the old version (7.10) first or does the new update just re-write the old one?

No, move it to the PC...you can keep for later use on an SD card.

I did not have to delete, it automatically overwrites it.

Make sure that you BACKUP the entire contents before doing anything else. Use Windows Explorer and show all files including hidden/system/readonly -TT Home does not always backup entirely.
I only had to send them my receipt (emailed the copy of my Dell receipt). They told me to move the NA Maps off the unit along with the Western European Maps before I tried to load the new one on.
They also told me I would need an SD card to have both NA and Europe on the TomTom together because they are larger maps.
I have to be honest, with all the forum stuff I had read before getting my unit and after I thought it was going to be a real hassle. It wasn't. Compared to what I have gone through with other computer and tech issues over the years it was a breeze. Virtually no wait time on the phone to get to a rep. The rep answered my questions without hassles. I got my maps and they work.
Maybe you should get this all in the package and not have to go through any of it, but that doesn't seen reasonable given the frequency of software updates related to hardware updates.
I paid $269 from Dell for a 920, that seems like a lot bang for the buck

Did you really need the SD card?
When you moved them off did you use HOME or Windows Explorer?
From this forum I understood that the new map is smaller in size than the old?
Also this download 7.15 does it include both North America and Europe?
Thanks
I have contacted TT several times in the past week as I too got my 920 fom Dell. They have been excellent. Great response time to phone and emails and the service was excellent.
