TT One LE -- SD Card Not Supported? Tue Apr 29, 2008 11:44 pm
I bought a new TomTom One LE, selecting that model in part because I wanted Itinerary Planning capability and I also liked the idea of having an SD card slot for loading itineraries, and possibly other things. When I first unpacked the unit I noticed it had a sticker over the SD slot, with text saying that US/Canada maps are already loaded so no SD card is needed.
When I inserted an SD card, I received a screen after a few seconds showing a graphic of an SD card with a big red X across it coming out of a TT unit. I took this to mean I needed to remove the card, but I'm not sure why. Does it mean that the unit doesn't support use of an SD card, or possibly just that there's something wrong with the one I tried to use?
I couldn't find anything in the manual about using SD cards.
Not sure what you mean... what content needs to be transferred? Maybe you could walk me through? I couldn't seem to get it to do anything other than (apparently) tell me to remove the card.
Think of the TomTom as your computer and the SD card as an old floppy disk. When you turn on the computer it checks for an external drive, and if it finds one it tries to boot from that drive. If it doesn't find one it continues to boot from the internal drive.
Your TomTom is the same way, if you want to run it from the SD card, you need to install an application, map, voices, etc onto the SD card in order for it to boot.
The message you saw means "I see an external drive and I'm trying to boot from it, but I can't find an application on it to run".
So, I think what you're saying is the SD card really can't be used with this unit for what I had in mind using it for. Too bad, as it seems like it would be handy if it could. As a practical matter then, what might the SD slot be used for?
Thanks, Tim. I may give it a try. In your opinion, what's likely the simplest way to do it.. i.e., load the application and maps onto a card? I'd take about a 1 gig card, right?
Right, and the internal memory on the device itself is probably about 1 GB, so the net additional drive space would be zero. So to really store anything of size, you would probably want to go to a 2 GB card.
But in reality, you can load a ton of itineraries into your internal memory before you would run out of drive space... itineraries take up almost no memory.
