Hi everyone. I'm new to GPS and I just bought a new Garmin Nuvi 780 from Amazon.com for $500. I have used the 260W and I like it so I went with a 780 to get traffic reports, MSN Direct, etc. But I have a few questions about it:

1.) Is this a good deal? It should be delivered tomorrow. I saw these models in Best Buy and Circut City for $699.
2.) Do you know if this model is shipped with the latest maps? If not, I assume that I can go to the Garmin website and get the latest one for free.
4.) Any major recent problems with this Model?
3.) What is a good recommended SD card?

thanks! Smile

1) Yes, that is a good price.

2) Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't. Correct, you should have no problem getting the latest one.

4) Just update to the latest software with WebUpdater and you should be fine.

3) What are you going to put on it?

Thanks Tim!

I'll mostly use the SD card for MP3 and pictures. Should I keep additional POI's on it as well?

I'd keep whatever you can in the internal memory for better performance.

I would have purchased a Nuvi 760 + MSN Direct Receiver.

There's no difference between the 760 and 780 other than the 780's included MSN Direct receiver.

With the 780 you only get three months of MSN Direct. After that you have to pay for a subscription.

With the 760 + MSN Direct Receiver, you get a one year subscription. Not sure about Amazon, but on a number of other sites I've seen, the 760 + MSN Direct Receiver is cheaper or close to the price of the 780.

Yeah, I looked at doing that as well. But when I priced it out they both came out to roughly the same so I figured I'd get the receiver built it. No real reason in particular though. However, you are right about only three months of MSN with the 780. I didn't realize that at the time but looking back I'm not thinking it's not too much of a deal breaker. I think I'll be happy with the 780 because I thought the 260W was really nice.

The receiver isn't built into the Nuvi 780. The MSN Direct Receiver that comes with the Nuvi 780 is a GDB50 w/ only 3 months of service.

But he still got a good deal. He's got three months to see if he even like's msn before committing to it. Good choice.

1) It's a great deal. I haven't seen the price lower, and when you factor in no sales tax, a better deal
2)it probably will come with the 2008 maps. I got mine on Tuesday from Amazon and 2008 was on it. When you register at my.garmin.com you will be offered the 2009 maps as a download for free. Take it.
3)No problems with this unit. Be sure to run the WebUpdater program from Garimin to go to the latest firmware. You will probably have a version which has been updated twice since. Also update the Bluetooth and the Traffic firmware, too.
4) Use any SD card. I use SanDisk but they all work fine these days.

Thanks for all of the help. It should arive in the mail today. Based on your experience I'll probably get mine with 2008 as well. No sweat though, I'll get the updates at Garmin. Looking forward to trying it out this weekend! Very Happy
