What's so good about it? Thu May 08, 2008 2:57 pm
Reading through the posts, it seems like most people on this board are big Garmin fans with quite a few TT people as well. I have 2 Magellan units (one handheld and one in-car Roadmate) that I have been quite happy with. I have never used the other brands, so I was curious what is it about the Garmins and TT that has created this following? Why are the Magellans considered poo-poo!? What am I missing?

Everyone has their preferences and I think a lot of people have been turned off by Magellan's poor customer support. I have a Magellan in addition to an HP and have been quite happy with it, but I did experience problems with trying to perform an update and was less than pleased with Magellan's response. Fortunately, I had backed the unit up first so I was able to restore it and then update it again. Not everyone on here is comfortable with that or prepared for it. And like any newspaper, it is the bad things that people read and discuss. The story about the fireman saving the cat in the tree is always buried somewhere on page 47 where no one reads it or talks about it.
Success of a product(s) don't entirely depend on good technology.
MS is a shining example.
Only Bill had good vision to predict the future while others (=IBM) squandered the opportunity.
Magellan had good chance to go to the top, and they missed it. When Toyota & Honda made it, Hyundai has a tough fight to move up.
Magellan makes a decent product. They always have. Unfortunately they are not as fast to market with innovative features like TomTom is, and their customer support is horrible when stacked up against Garmin. So there just isn't much that they "shine" at anymore.

I see a company that needs your vision. Ready for a new career path?

Seriously, can you imagine if one of the manufacturers followed this website, latched on to a couple of people and contracted them to test and make recommendations?
Well, I know most of the major manufacturers do read these forums... not every post, but perhaps many in their section. I know a few people in here are also beta testers. So more of that might be going on than you realize.
We even have registered forum members who work for certain manufacturers. I know of at least one manufacturer who will send PMs to people that write here that they are having difficulties with their GPS. You might even be shocked to find out "who", but they didn't want themselves identified.
There was even someone from one of the mapping companies once that PM'd a member to help them "get their street on the map" so to speak.
But yeah, there is a lot of good info in here for them to digest.
Note though that I don't want to give the impression that there are GPS company employees posting here "in disguise" so to speak. They all pretty much do it via PM and those who do make public posts I add their company image to their profile so it is clear to everyone who they are.
