Thanks! You just taught me something I didn't know! Sun May 11, 2008 5:18 am
HappyFunBoater:
Thanks for tip on holding down the Signal Strength Icon to get to the satellite page. I figured the satellite page was history. Not sure about the red thing. I tried walking with it and see if it lined up to north but I was moving too slow. (No battery in the 5000 so I carried my portable car jump box--it has a power socket--my neighbors think I am nuts.) I'll have to try it tomorrow in the car.
Thanks again for the tip.
EDIT: Sorry this was supposed to be a reply to Little Red Flying Thingy. I must have inadvertantly started a new thread.

No Battery! Sun May 11, 2008 3:12 pm
Alas! The 5000 has no battery and as such no battery icon. What screen and where is the icon located? I'll try pressing the same spot and see if the function is still there.
This really cool, how do you know this stuff? My manual is abysimal, it hardly explains the functions that you use and nothing about the satellite page or the diagnostic page.
Do you know how to change any of the fields on the trip page?
I would like to display heading in degrees rather than N NE E etc. Also I would like to have a heading indicator in the map page when in 3D mode when routing. One has no idea where north is.

Ah, sorry. I have the 760. I have no idea where it is on the 5000. Try pressing on random locations. I bet it's in there somewhere.
BTW, I learned about these hidden features on this forum. Lots of tasty information.
As far as changing the field on the trip page, I don't think you can do it on the 760. But I know older Garmin's used to allow it. I have no idea about the 5000. Same goes for the heading in degrees. Sounds like you're using this on a boat or airplane?

Just Using It In The Car. Sun May 11, 2008 5:20 pm
Nuvi is a great car navigator but pretty useless for a boat or airplane, better than nothing but it is not designed to navigate a course. I want degrees just out of habit and a better precision than the N NE E ...
Well let's be honest, pure nerdiness!
EDIT: Actually you could navigate a course by using the OFF ROAD Routing under Tools> Settings>Navigation > Route > Preferences. But without course deviation and a heading in degrees it would be a rather tedious task. Off Road slaps a magenta course line on the map. You could navigate it by keeping the blue arrow (or whatever vehicle choice) on the magenta line.

Diagnostic Page on Nuvi 5000. Thu May 15, 2008 2:34 am
The button for diagnostic page is where the battery icon should be. It is on the main page (with the Where to? View map icons), just to the immediate left of the time on the top bar. Press and hold that area and the Nuvi 5000 will switch to the diagnostic page. Thanks for the heads up.
