nuvi gets left and right wrong sometimes Mon May 12, 2008 9:16 pm
Hi..Does anyone's Nuvi 260W get it's left and rights backwards? Mine will say the address that I'm looking for is on the left when it's actually on the right or the other way around. It's been wrong like this several times. Is this just a quirk I'll have to live with or what?

The problem is with the map data, not the 260W. It all goes back to the old computer corollary "dumb in - dumb out". More often than we would like the address numbering is just wrong in the map data. My home street is numbered incorrectly as it is backwards and odd/even numbers are reversed even though it has been reported numerous times to Navteq over the years. A mapping company truck (no idea who, though) was seen on an adjacent street a couple years ago mapping the area. If it was Navteq they made an incorrect assumption. In my neighborhood two adjacent streets are numbered low to high numbers in a south to north direction and my street was numbered in the opposite direction for some reason, high to low. I don't know by who - township or post office???
Do I need the 3.40 version of the software? Can I download it even if I have dial up internet? Will I need a cable for the computer? LOL I don't know anything about this. I want the '09 map also..if I order one will it be a card or disc that I put in the slot on the side of the Nuvi?
At least it's the data's fault that it gets right and left wrong sometimes. We were on a new road today and the Nuvi doesn't have it and it was directing us the old way around it.

Usually it does not hurt to keep your GPS firmware up to date, so I suggest you go for it. The firmware file is 5.44 MB and is certainly down loadable with a dial-up connection. It will just take longer.
As for the cable - you will need a USB cable Type A to Mini 5-pin. A few minutes ago I used such a cable with my nuvi 680 to update my firmware and the cable only cost me ----- Price Check! .....One Dollar! I bought it at the Dollar Tree store locally and it is a 30 inch retractable cable. It works and you can't beat the price. OR, If you have a digital camera you may already have the necessary cable.
As for CN NANT 2009 - I would hold off on updating as there are people out there complaining that it is not as good as 2008 version.
Sometimes, i encountered the same problem as well.
But the map points to right but the voice told me to turn left.
Weird!!!
Just an update. Garmin is right. I heard wrongly because Garmin doesn't announced the right turn because the distance is too short and a left turn to another street after that. Just be aware of that!!
I guess this might be another area for Garmin to improve on. You really need to look at the map to get it right. Most people usually listen to the voices thus you miss the turn. The map is good but not the voices.
