7100 update 1.2 Thu May 15, 2008 9:17 am
Downloaded about 3 hours with firefox and the download manager Navigon recomends and installing as I type. Windows Vista users may find that the installer hangs .... because of User Accounts Controle ...... a simple sollution is to right click the update.exe file you downloaded and select run as administrator. It will take about 30 - 45 min to install the update. I am not sure if the update will fit on the original SD card and I can't confirm it right now as I had upgraded to a 4 Gig card a while back. If all goes well I will have about 13 hours of use with the new update when I get home from work and will let you know what I think.
I finished the DL this morning. I was getting only 36.2 kbs with XP (est. time 14hrs!!) So I used Firefox and was DL'ng at ~250kbs! (est. time ~4hrs). I think I will use the firefox pugin more often
As for fitting in the oem 2gb SD card, I think it was been confirmed by Navigon that it will work. The downloaded file is 1.9gb...pretty close. Now, if the file is 1.9gb, and the original data on the card is around 1.85 or so, that meand Navigon did not compress the data at all for transport? The doesn't seem too efficient.
My point was that Navigon released a NON-COMPRESSED file for dirstibution, which I feel is not very efficient and contribute to the long download times. I am aware of the additional data, hence the slightly larger file.
Not sure if you realise just because the file is not zip, rar etc does not mean its not compressed. You can compress a file and have it self extract in a .exe format.
I just zipped the .exe file 1,951,853 and it ended up zipped 1,952,424 so you gain nothing by compressing the file actually it inceased slightly.

Ok ..... So I have had a day at work .... Courier ..... to try out the new update. It's pretty hard to judge it on just one day but all in all the 1.2 update did have a positive impact on my day. Still not perfect but then neither was my Magellan or Clarion I had.
I don't usually use the gps for my morning run as I just don't need it but today I started right form home. First thing I noticed was that I couldn't load my old route that I had saved for my school run in the mornings and then the new HYW icon they use for the Trans Canada Hyw 417 .... very hard to read the numbers inside the white Maple Leaf though this is my only complaint about the map I can find. The new map is good though there are still streets that are missing that are in our map books from last year (2006) but with the way new sub divisions keep popping up in Ottawa that is not surprising. It still amazes me how accurate the street numbers are ...... when the 7100 tells me I have reached my destination I just pull over.
All in all I give the map a 9.5 / 10
Now for the bigger complaints people have had. I have seen allot of complaints about the routing ...... surprisingly I have not been one of them though I do get the odd wacky route. I have noticed that if you are sitting in one place and going though routes without moving .... as I did when I first got the 7100 it will show you some real wacky routs but the min you pull out the route cleans itself up pretty good. that’s not to say I agreed with them all and the new update has cleaned up the routing allot. You will find that there are not as many turns in your routes and it does not use as much of a straight line through residential areas as before instead using the main roads and Hyw's more which is a great improvement over even the last update. The small numbers have been cleaned up .... re routing is just as fast if not a bit faster.
Most of the complains for the routing have been taken care of but not all the 7100 does not seem to like rural roads ...... it tried to rout me back out to the Hyw from a small village to go to my second stop ..... about a 15 km difference compared to going cross country as I usually do. The Hyw being a 100 Km / hr compared to 80 km / hr on the back roads and it would not give up on this route .... in both Fast Route and Optimal Route ..... This problem I had before and still persists with this one section of my run. Every once in a while the 7100 will pick a route and will not give up on it till you cancel it and reload the destination. now most people might not have noticed this but I have driven every back road through this are over the years hunting Geese and know every inch of it ...... keep in mind this is just one area or 1 of 39 routes I used today so still a great improvement from even the last update.
All in all I give the Routing a 8 / 10.
POI's ...... I rarely use them and have most turned off as I find them distracting and just search them as I need them but did leave them on today ...... there are allot more POI's in the new update than before and the majority seem to fade out as you are navigating and come back as you come to a stop ...... something I didn't notice before but then I normally have them turned off so this may have been like this before .... not sure. But for those who feel the POI's are important ..... they should be a little more happy with this than those that don't find them as important like me.
Off the top of my head I can't think of much else though I will have allot more time to play with it tomorrow as I have a heavy day with Avon deliveries tomorrow.
Bassnut,
Thanks for your update. I am considering the 7100. I have some concerns about the battery life because I do want to use it out of the car, so that might be a problem for me. But I was also waiting to hear what people thought of the update.
Regarding the cross country issue you had. On my Garmin Streetpilot 2610 when creating a route I can select Shorter as my route option and it will typically create a route that goes cross country. It is not clear to me from what you said whether the 7100 does not have the option to create a shorter route or whether it was the particular route you were on that seem to have a problem going cross country.

I primarily use the fastest or Optimal routing but will have to check tomorow am. As a courier, especially in the city shortest route will ussually route you through too many side streets / resedential streets, stop signs, lights and one ways so primarily I wouldn't really use it too often though I will check it out. Sometimes the fastest rout is not the most direct. Like I said this little part of the route seems to be the only place I have had this problem and one other place on the oppsosite side of the city but have not been there today so I can't comment on that one...... like I said it is a bit soon to completly judge this update on one day.
Thanks Bassnut. I understand it is too soon to really tell about the update.
I also understand what you're saying about using shortest in the city. My use is generally when I want to drive cross country, not use highways, or take the most direct route to a location. I know it will generally take longer because of the slower speeds (not always), but I will use it often just to avoid being put on the highway. Sometimes it's just to enjoy a more leisurely ride, other times it's to avoid the traffic/delays on the highway. My current GPS doesn't have traffic so can't factor that in when creating a route. Since my next GPS, whether 7100 or something else will have traffic maybe I will use shortest less except when the GPS alerts me to a problem.
When you've had more time with the update please let us know what you think.

Wel had a chance to play this weekend as I was down to Kingston which is about a 600 km round trip. The 7100 laid out a straight run this time .... the exact run I would normally do with the exception that it pulled me off the 401 3 times to just get back on again. Obviously Navigon didn't get that little bug worked out yet or the U-turn bug as it still on occasions does ask me to make a U-turn even though the feature is turned off. Both are minor little bugs that are easily avoided if you are paying attention And I still stick with my original feeling that the update is a big improvment over the last update.
