PostSeeking GPS with Speed Alert Feature  Wed May 14, 2008 7:12 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

I'm buying GPS for my spouse and want to make sure that I can retire from my "job" of alerting when we're driving above a certain speed on the highways Smile. Basically, if the speed limit is 65, I want a sound alert if we're going above 73 (for example).

The only other features that I require are voice, US & Canada maps, and points of interest. I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive GPS, definitely 250 or below.

Any suggestions?
thanks!

I don't know of any that offers it for all roads. The newer Nuvi 700 series, TomTom 730/930, and the navigon models currently offer it for most major highways.

The nuvi 700's have nearly every road marked with speed limit, probably 90% coverage or better here. But they don't (currently) allow for an audible alert. I seldom see the speed posted on TomTom's,never on local roads, but they do allow for an audible warning.

I certainly don't have 90% coverage near me.... more like 2%-5%.

Guess that makes me lucky! LOL

Tim, I assume that's with the new 09 (?) map. On the previous map, speed limits only appeared on the major highways. Perhaps a new thread on how often speed limits appear n other areas of the country with inew maps on the nuvi 700 series. I suspect it's often.

Thanks for all the responses.

To clarify - I don't need the GPS to tell me the speed limit - I'm happy to set the max speed myself as long as it can sound an alert when the max speed is exceeded.

Does that broaden my choices?

The TT will certainly allow you to set a max speed. Do you plan on manually changing it for every road? Confused

Yes, the TomTom even has a mode that I really enjoy (but nobody else seems to) where if you are traveling above a certain speed the "next turn icon" will go into full screen mode and the moving map will disappear. I set the speed at which that happens to about 60mph. Then, whenever I'm on the interstate, the moving map disappears (I find it to be distracting on those boring stretches of interstate) and the next turn icon goes into full screen clearly showing the next maneuver and distance to it.

But you can also just set the speed alert alarm.
