How to get VR to work everywhere, if you lack the files. Wed May 21, 2008 6:54 pm
This is for Navcore7 with V7 maps:
Europe: http://tomtom.com/updates/ASR_Western_Europe.zip
(about 377mb with 19 files)
For NA its:
http://tomtom.com/updates/ASR_North_America.zip
(similar size with 50 or so files)
You just need to put the cspeech files in the roots of the respective map folders, one on internal memory and the other on an SD card and you are good to go!

I have been talking to TomTom and they keep telling me to go here http://tomtom.com/updates/ASR_Western_Europe.zip I keep telling them that the link link is dead but they keep repeating it, do they know what they are doing
Gary
Since links are in fact dead – can anyone who had a chance to download them, please, upload the files to this board or to some other location so we can reuse them?
I have 800.1765, do you think I could trust the 800.1727 to work or would I be pushing my luck.
Also, looking at the internal memory, I'll have buy an SD card so I can move the European maps over so I can add them. I see there is a posting on what can be removed. I'll look there fist to see what I can take out of the main memory with out changing the functionality.
does work but have had to remove (move) stuff out onto a smaller SD card I have including all of the computer voices (46mb each).
I assume there is an issue when you have too little memory internally (had about 45mb free) as the sytem kept re-booting. When I moved the last of the computer voices off (leaving me with just over 100mb free) the system started to work again.
Hmmm. I see where the chat about not enough internal memory comes in.

http://www.tomtom.com/updates/asr/asr_north_america_805.1801.zip is corrupt.
WinRAR shows:
! C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\TomTom\asr\asr_north_america_805.1801.zip: The archive is corrupt
! C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\TomTom\asr\asr_north_america_805.1801.zip: CRC failed in asr_north_america_805.1801\cspeech_IA.dat. The file is corrupt
! C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\TomTom\asr\asr_north_america_805.1801.zip: The archive is corrupt
I've downloaded this three times just to be sure that it was indeed corrupt.
Please could you also put up the earlier versions i.e. the ones for version 7 maps.
The required csspeechxx.dat files should already be in the specific map folder (North_America if you have a 720) on your unit. Use Windows Explorer to look at the contents of the map folder to make sure they are there.
What you may need to create is a file called support_asr.dat. Use notepad to create the file with just the number 1 in it, nothing else. No spaces, carriage returns or anything. Make sure you save it as support_asr.dat. It is a text file BUT you don't want Windows adding the extension .txt to the file so that it becomes support_asr.dat.txt. The way to make sure the extension isn't there is by going into Control Panel-->Folder Options-->Advanced settings and make sure 'Hide extensions for known file types' is UNCHECHECKED.
Now that the file is created, use Explorer to place it in the asr folder on your unit.
Now, you should have VR capability on your unit.
When you navigate to-->Address, the next screen should have the VR icons activated and you should be able to speak the city, the street and the number.
So, Home is not involved at all. VR only works when the unit is undocked. It doesn't work using the 'Operate my Go' option in Home.
Your instruction is: What you may need to create is a file called support_asr.dat. Use notepad to create the file with just the number 1 in it, nothing else.
Where does the number 1 go in the file name?
What about the downloaded file? Do I unzip it to an SD card in the TT?
Also, when I try to unzip the file, I get a message saying it is corrupt.
No. The 1 is the content of the file itself, not part of the name.
Are you trying to dl the files because you don't have csspeech files in your map folder? If you have the csspeechxx.dat files, then no need to dl them.
They go directly in the specific map folder (North_America, probably) you have. If you plan on having the map folder on the sd card, then that's where the files go.
If you are getting a 'corrupt' error, I suggest you try again.
when i try to use the vr it says "speech recognition files not installed"...i believe it's the cspeechxxx.dat files but the one posted here says corrupt or invalid file. Any ohter ideas anyone, thank you
What version map do you have and was it originally on your unit when you got it or did you dl it from TomTom? Also, what is the version of your firmware?
Why did you not upgrade the 7.10 map using the Latest Map Guarantee? If you still happen to be in the 30-day window, then take advantage of that now.
The reason I asked whether you obtained a newer map than the original was, if you did, the compressed .cab file will reside in your dl folder on your computer and you might have been able to get the required files there.
Personally, I'd go upgrade all the way to the version 8 app. Then get the version 8 map and you might get the IQ routes feature. I assume we are talking about a 720 or 920?
I also got a corrupted file message when I tryed to download.
I copied the speech files from a friends 930. there is one file per state
so I only copied the state files I was interested in and everytihing works
standard Tomtom go720 with the latest NA maps

Dhn,
Thanks for the prompt reply.
I was brief with my 1st posting as I was unsure where it would appear. Although I selected to 'Reply' the following screen indicated my posting would go to 'Tom Tom Forums' and wasn't specific to the VR subject.
My TomTom is the Go 720, What TT Home refers to as the 'Application' is V8.010.
In common parlance is this 'The Firmware'? If not what is and how do I access it?
There is no cspeech.dat file in the Southern_Africa directory so it seems that VR is not available in SA.
Please be tolerant of this newbie, but I'm beginning to wish that I had bought a Garmin. TT don't seem to support their customers very well at all.
Now that I know how, I will now do more posting on the SD card and Safety camera forums.
Hey, you're doing ok. Yes, the 8.010 is the firmware (you tap the satellite bars and the next screen shows the firmware version installed. Tap the version number and the next screen shows the map version & build installed).
If no cspeech.dat file in the map folder, I guess it's not supported. BUT, if you downloaded the map for installation, the compressed .cab file is on your computer in the dl folder. Look at the contents of the map folder there just to make sure the file isn't in the map folder there. If it IS, then extract it and copy to the map folder on the unit.
It doesn't matter what country you are in, some TT Support people are good, some not so much. I'm not sure Garmin support is any better though the Garmin experts here can comment on that.

I have recently updated the firmware on my TT920 to version 8.3 and also updated the NA/Europe maps to version 815. I noticed that the voice recognition stopped working. Does anyone have this problem? I tried rebooting it using the reset hole at the bottom of the unit but it did not help. Does anyone have other ways to fix this?
Are there csspeechxx.dat files in the NA map folder? If so, you shouldn't need this but try, anway:
Add a text file called support_asr.dat (NOT support_asr.dat.txt) with only the value 1 in it, no carriage returns, blanks, etc. and put it in the asr folder.

I do have the cspeech_XX.dat file in the North_America folder. I also have the support_asr.dat (witout the .txt extension) file but it is located in the ASR folder. It had the value of 1 in the file with a trailing space and a carriage return. I removed the <CR>. VR ICONs (menu) remain disabled. I also removed the trailing space leaving the file with just the value 1. VR icons still disabled. I think this file as there before I upgraded to version 8.3 and I did not have any problem with the VR.
TheNorth America map is in my Internal Memory and the EuropeAN map is in the 4GB SD card. I also removed the SD card and operated the 920 with only the internal memory, the VR icons remained disabled.
I got a chance to test the system today. I noticed that the voice commands are jumpy, that is it does not run smoothly. The system hung a couple of time when I turned it on. I had to use reset hole to restart it.
I am seeing the lane guidance feature in my 920 with the 8.3 firmware and 815 maps. This is great! I just need to restore my VR.

I did. No luck. Where can I get the previous version of the application prior to 8.3? I don't believe I have a backup. I want to use that to see if it will restore the VR feature back.
With the new 8.3 app, I also notice the car preference icon is also disabled.

The car preference icon has always been greyed out....in every firmware release. It is functionality that was never implemented by TomTom and was supposed to be geared to those with TT units hard wired in their autos.
I think you're thinking of the icon for changing the "Change Car Symbol". That's still there (page 3 of preferences)
