Running 760 on USB Power Fri May 23, 2008 5:10 am
I am intending to run my new 760 in both my car, and on my motorcycle. I have a RAM mount holder for my cycle (I know the 760 is not weatherproof but I need / want the larger screen / and features of this unit - I will cover with plastic during inclement weather). The 760 is also about 1/2 the price, and has more features that a comparable Zumo unit.
The RAM mount holds the 760 very securely, however it is not powered and really only permits powering via USB.
I have a USB Power source on the bike. Problem is: When I connect the the Nuvi 760 to the USB power source it thinks it is connected to the computer, and does not operate as a GPS anymore.
There is no indication in the manual that the powering by USB port puts the unit into the computer connect mode. It simply states that you can power the unit by the USB Port.
I had a 660 for short period and my recollection was that it would continue to operate as a GPS with just a usb power source (if you were not actually connected to a computer).
Is this a problem I will have to deal with by only running via battery?
this could be a real issue because my trips have historically been up to 11 hours of riding when I go on them, and the Garmin Nuvi does not run that long.

It appears the problem I am having is specific to the mini USB Power supply I have on the Motorcycle. The power source I m using on the motorcycle is the Powerlet PPC-015 with a right angle adaptor.
Last night I plugged the 760 into my home (AC) mini USB charger I normally use for my Cell Phone. the Nuvi 760 unit came on and operated as a GPS unit (It did not appear as if it was attached to a computer).

There is a note in the web site http://www.powerlet.net/pdf/ppc015.pdf :
There is a bit of confusion on the description with respect to where the unit is connected to.

Note to Garmin Nuvi Owner’s:
This cable will charge your internal batteries of the Nuvi GPS by utilizing the USB port on the side of the unit. The Nuvi GPS must be turned off and then plug the cable into the USB side port. This cable will only power the Nuvi GPS by utilizing the USB port located on the back of the vehicle suction cup mount plate. This USB port is centered in the mount plate.

Clearl - I need to do some more research on how to make this work.

Nuvi 760 power via USB Problem resolved Fri May 23, 2008 10:18 pm
In reading other posts - i have found a solution

Plug USB/charger cable into the Nuvi and computer and wait for it to be "discovered". (recognized as a mass storage device). Then slide the power switch to the RIGHT, which is the locked position. Disconnect the usb plug from the nuvi and immediately plug it back in. Slide the power switch back to the center position and after it boots, you will be in nav mode as well as charging.
