I am considering the purchase of the Garmin 660 which I have found online and when I went to place the order the vendor claims that I need to also purchase a high speed SD card (an additional $119 for a 1gb on sale). Is this required or is he just trying to stick me for some addtional accessories? Also does it have to be a high speed card?

Oo, oo, oo. [Hand waving high in the air.] Can I take a guess?!
B&H Photo, or any one of the dozen other NYC shops that only sell cheap if they can talk you into a TON of other useless crap? And if you don't buy the crap then the product mysteriously goes from in-stock to back-ordered? What do I win?
Thank you both for your response. I'd rather not say who the vendor is at this time just in case they monitor this site or have a mole, as I went ahead and orderd online instead of talking to a sales person. The price was just to good to pass up. They were rated as a 5 star vendor with extremely good reviews as a seller. It was not B&H Photo but might be one of the others you were talking about. Will report about the vendor and experience after delivery or sooner if we seem to have problems.

But these are "special" SD cards. I don't have the time to explain the difference. Just trust me. Oh, and using the $8 card will void your warranty and cause erectile disfunction Really.

B&H is one of the most highly respected shops in NY, in fact the one I recommend the most - particularly for camera gear. I'd be surprised to hear if they are trying high-pressure sales to get a customer to purchase unnnecessary goods. I've been buying photo gear from them since the mid-90's, never had an issue with them at all.

I am suprised as well. I have had nothing but good dealings with B&H.
Note that the original poster didn't say it was B&H... only someone else's reply guessed it might be.
Yes, I did note that - I think HappyFunBoater saw an ad for B&H in the back of a photo magazine and made an incorrect assumption. Not all the NY stores are crooks.

Yep, I shouldn't have mentioned B&H by name. They tried to sell me extra stuff awhile back, but I've certainly had more issues with other NYC companies. Sorry, B&H.
But to make it absolutely clear, you don't need an extra memory card. I purchased one locally for my new 660 (4 Gb) becasue I have a whole bunch of books on tape that I listen to while I drive.
