2009 map update fiasco Wed Jun 11, 2008 5:03 pm
Some of the new Nuvi's aren't immediately update-able, due to the acquiring satellite date in the unit. Garmin doesn't seem to be able to rectify this problem, so many of you are being asked to send proof of purchase. Others are sent free disks and most are being charged $10 for the inconvenience they have created.
I was able to get Garmin to transfer the product key code from my Nuvi 360 2009 map update disk. I was then able to use the disk to update my Nuvi 760
The one thing I really like about the 760 over the 360 is the map presentation. I have always had a hard time thinking my way around a strange city using the 360's map.
The 360's cartoon like presentation doesn't show all the important street names, parks and some important landmarks. I have found that the 760 map shows everything in a much clearer format.
The 360 was nice and it is hard parting with it. I especially liked it's small size and the way it felt in my hands. But then for less than a hundred dollars more, the 760 has more features and is well worth the price.

I just got my new 750 today and have just registered it, installed the new 3.0 update and am downloading the '09 maps as I type. I got it on ebay and the guy insisted that it was a new unit. I guess he didn't lie. Ordered it on Sunday & got it today, $337.00.
That's why I wouldn't get a refurbished unit. That and the battery issue. Not sure if they replace them. I say people bidding refurbished 750's up over $300.
To JackS. I certainly don't mean to bust your bubble but I don't think you really got a good deal on your Nuvi. Circuit City and Best Buy are selling the 760 for $359 U.S. and the 760 comes with Bluetooth for handsfree calling and the Traffic receiver but as long as you are happy it's all good.
Actually, Costco and BB have the 760 for $349 and CC has it for $359. CC will price match with a 10% price match on the difference. So you can get it at CC for $348

I considered that but I have no use for BT or the TR that I would not subscribe for, and with tax it would have been $43.54 more for two things I have zero use for. I got a case, and a vent mount for the money I saved.
I only reason I mentioned the price is because I see a lot of people on ebay constantly bidding for refurbished units for almost the price I paid.

Ahhh. Tax will get ya every time.
..........unless you buy on-line. (Which is why I do most of the time).
After waiting a week for Garmin to straighten out my sat acquire date problem I'm one that has to pay $10 to get the DVD. So I ordered it today. Then they tell me it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get the DVD. It's a good thing Garmin makes good GPS units because their customer service stinks. When was the last time your had to wait 4 to 6 weeks for something you purchased?
Everything I've purchased in the last two years has arrived within 7 days even from the east coast. (I live in CA)
Anyone out there order the DVD? Does it really take 4 to 6 weeks?

4 to 6 weeks sounds a little excessive. The tech must have previously worked some place that went out of business. They usually say a week to 10 days, and then put it in the mail the next day.
I ordered the DVD as opposed to the download. Took less than a week to get and included an update to Mapsource which came with my handheld unit.
Was a time consuming install.
I just received my email that I was all set to update to the 2009 map. I had bought my 760 at Costco and it came with the 2008. When I went to update it it said I wasn't eligible. A simple minute call to Garmin and a week later I have my update

I is happy.
Lucky you. A simple call for me lasted almost 3 hours and it did nothing. 2 days after I emailed them they gave me the update. The update took a long time to download even though I averaged aroud 500k. The update itself took forever to extract and load. The whole process took 2.5 - 3 hours.

At least you guys have something to download to. We have been patiently waiting for my friends Costco Nuvi 760 to arrive. Today he received a Street Pilot C550 in its place. Not even listed in their inventory? Hopefully Garmin will have the map update problem resolved before his next order comes in.

Yea, the update did take a while to extract and load. But from download to complete it was about 2 hrs. 45 min. for the download and 1:15 for the install

At least your's downloaded. I keep getting the message that I don't have enough storage space on my nuvi for the download. I even removed the usless languages and a couple of the free books and still not enough room.
Then you should have more than enough resources on the nuvi. You probably have one of two issues. Either the C:/ drive on your computer has little available space (you may need up to 5 gigs free if I remember)or you are not allowing the download program to install the map to your device, instead trying to load via mapsource or a direct copy. The maps first download to your computers root drive, in general, C:/. It then loads itself, overwriting the existing map. There is not room for both the old and new maps to reside on the nuvi drive. If you wish to keep the old one as well, do a complete backup before adding the new map. Do not use mapsource or any other method to add the maps to your device. Let the map download application do it's work.

I have a 500 GB hard drive with 369 GB space still available. When I downloaded the '09 map it didn't automatically transfer to the nuvi. I wonder if I can download it again from Garmin? I would hate to try to delete the '08 map first and possibly lose both maps. I could live with the '08 map if I have to.
Unless you have your web browser set to autorun downloaded applications (definitely NOT a good idea, but a good way to get lots of malware/viruses), you will have to find and run the map update application which you downloaded from Garmin. You will also need to know the product key, which I think you can find by going to your my.garmin.com page, clicking My Maps, then clicking Map Downloads.
Where that file was saved depends on where you told your web browser to save it.
Bought a nuvi 760 on Wednesday with a sat acquire date of Dec. 12th, 2007. Called yesterday evening at 6pm, talked to someone at Garmin within 10 minutes, e-mailed my receipt to him 5 minutes later, got an e-mail back half-an-hour later saying I could download the maps, downloaded and updated my nuvi two hours later.
If this is a fiasco, I have to wonder what Garmin's good customer service is like.
YourFun, it looks like all the very recent occurances of the wrong sat acquisition issue are being dealt with pretty quickly. I don't think there was more than a week or two where Garmin appeared to be "blind-sided" and without a clear mandate to service personnel on how to handle it. Hopefully all is straightened out now.

It sure looks like several people are getting good service again. I know Garmin has always treated me well. One has to wonder though how so many different answers are given out. The last Tech I talked to said they stopped looking at satellite recognition and then started again. Now it seems they have finally found a way to quickly resolve the problem.

I didn't tell my browser to save it, I ran the software. I know where the update went to, it was stored as a document file. When I try to run it and send it to my Garmin, it replies that I don't have enough space on my Garmin for the download and it lists the amount of space I need. That number went down when I deleted foreign languages, but not enough.
It says that I still need about 1.5 GB of space. I have the product key info, but it never asked me for that to download. This has been the least automatic download procedure that I have ever experienced in my 9 years of owning a computer.

I e-mailed them too about 3 days ago and have yet to hear from them.
That is very strange! When I downloaded I opened the file and it did all the extraction and then it just installed without any issues rather quick to my 750. I am pretty happy with new maps since now just about every street has speed limit displayed and other improvements. Also I have more POI around here.

My bad. I'm not used to Vista yet. I was trying to send it to the Garmin. In Vista the top choice when you click on the application is 'Open". Well, you can't open the file. So I tried to send it to the Garmin. This function does not do the extraction.
I suppose that I could have removed the '08 maps myself from "My Computer" and then sent it to the Garmin, but I didn't want to risk it. I should have went to the next option below "Open" and instead hit "Run as administrator". That downloaded the file. Hooray!

look on your hard drive for rmu_cnnant2009 this is the downloaded map data if you find this file it is an execute file you can click on it and it will run hook you device to your computer with a USB cable and you should be able to install the 2009 maps.
This worked for me. Best luck
Thanks for your time.
How do you backup the old maps before the update? It is as simple as copying elsewhere a specific file from the Garmin folder and if need to, pasting it over the newer one to restore the old maps? TIA for your reply.

Not sure if you need to do that since you still have the '09 map file on your computer if you have downloaded it from Garmin. I intend to copy my '09 map file to a DVD tomorrow. Just save the product key and you can keep downloading the '09 file off your computer if you don't erase it. Why keep the '08 maps?
I agree with you. I don't see any need to keep the old map either. But I do know a "certain TomTom owner" who keeps every map he ever had for his device on SD cards, I guess so that he can refer to them if he feels a need? I'll have to ask him why the next time I talk to him. (unless he sees the post and answers)
Jack, yes i did made a backup of the 2GB download of the 2009 maps updating program. What i want to do is to make a backup of the 2008 maps in my unit (Nuvi 250W). Why? Probably because there's a possibility that i don't like the results after the update. (see the message from Jermar posted on May 05, 2008 6:44 pm that i've quoted at the end of this message). Anyone knows the procedure...wich file to backup? TIA for your reply.

We have six pages of people trying to aquire the 2009 maps. I would like some comments on what everyone thinks of the new maps. I take the same route to work daily. After the new maps, my 260 tells me to exit at least two miles sooner than the correct exit as the original maps indicated. It also told me to make a U turn when my destination was ahead of me, and in sight! I'm glad it was free, but I'm not sure if this is the cost.
I'd just make a backup of the entire device... something that perhaps should be done anyway and the maps account for probably 90% of the size of the data... Just copy the entire drive.
