PostReturning 760 because...  Wed Jun 11, 2008 7:34 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

1) not loud enough. im not enough of a techie to be hacking anything to make it louder. i want out-of-the-box loudness.
2) the mp3 player freezes when i try to play my large lectures. besides, i dont think it would have been that easy to save the spot i was listening to using a "bookmark" anyway.
3) my bluetooth phone is not compatible. this is not the 760's fault bc garmin doesnt list my phone (samsung i760 - pocket pc professional phone), but i was hoping it would just work... then again, even if it did work, im sure it wouldnt be loud enough...

im surprised at myself for not being clear enough... i meant, out-of-the-box AFTER pushing the volume up to the max. i just meant that i have read about hacks or tweaks on this forum about ways to make it louder, other than the standard methods. sorry for not being clear... but thanks

You can run it through your car FM as well.

You can hit pause before you shut it down and I think it picks back up right where you left off. I believe I read that somewhere in this forum.

yes it is true. I've done this on MP3s and audiobooks.

its defintely good to hear it does remember the spot through pausing, like a normal mp3 player should, but unfortunately, it still crashed when i tried playing really large mp3s (lectures)... oh well. im trying to enjoy my magellan 1412. i keep trying to convince myself it was worth the switch since it is sooo much cheaper...

Hi Dave,

Thanks for sharing your comments.
I've had the 760 for about a month now and am very pleased with this unit.

I agree the volume is not very loud out of the box, but I always run it through the car stereo anyway, so this has been a non issue for me.

Once in a while I'll use the internal speaker (If my wife is watching a movie or something) but because it's so infrequent, I can live with it.

I'm surprised your getting freezing with the MP3 player because I've converted my Chris Rock DVD to MP3 format, and dragged it onto the 760's MP3 player, as well as other "hour+ long" shows of other comedians, and I've never had any freezing at all.

I drive taxi, and this thing is going all day long as entertainment for my customers.

As far as the blue-tooth, have you made sure you have the very latest firmware and software updates?

My HTC smartphone would not sync up at first, but after I installed the latest updates, now it works fine.
The Garmin rep even told me my phone was not compatible, but it works fine.

I did have issues with a constant crackling/static noise coming from the unit (over the fm modulator as well as the speaker) but I exchanged the unit with a replacement, and the new one has worked perfectly.

The only little bug I get is sometimes when I'm using the 760 as a speakerphone, and I try to transfer the conversation back to the phone, once in a while it "jams' up and it wont let me, but this is once in a while.

I hope you're next unit will work well for you.

Regards
AJ

I hope for your sake you didn't get it at Best Buy. I recently got an e-mail from an irate former BB customer who tried to return his TomTom GPS. I won't paste his whole beef, but here is their return policy.

Hint: You have 14 days from the time you bought it and a 15% restocking fee to look forward to.

That is fairly common for GPS devices from many electronics stores.

I'll bet it's because they are on to people that 'buy' things a GPS or digital camera only to use on a 2 week trip or vacation and then return it like they didn't like it.

I have to give kudos to my local BestBuy in Kingston, Ontario.
These guys were great. I don't remember exactly how many GPS units I tried out over 4 weeks or so, but 5 or 6 anyway.

I told them upfront if I didn't like it that I was returning it, and they were excellent and very supportive from day one.
I was honest about my intentions wth the store manager from the start and she even encouraged me to try dfferent units until I found the one that was right for me.

They did breath a sigh of relief when I finally decded to keep my 760, LOL.
They never charged me a restockng fee ether.

I don't imagine most stores are like this.

Regards
AJ
